Martytw. Can you convince them to make a 250-265gn spitzer .458 bullet. Something to use in 45/70s and 458 for a flat shooting lower recoil load for smaller game? I use the pointy little 300 gn bullets which work great ,but would like some sort of 250gn bullet for use on pigs and other small stuff.

When you asked your question, did you specify whether you were looking at the 300 gr X Spitzer Flat Base or the 300 gr X Flat Nose Flat Base? There is substantial difference in bullet size for these and the 300 X S requires a higher opening velocity than the 300 X FN. The FN is more meant for the 458 caliber "pistol" rounds whereas the 300 X S is more for the rifle rounds. With pistol rounds, they are referring to the lower velocity rounds used in Encores. The 45-70 falls in this category, and I would suspect that the answer you received is for the X FN not the X S BTW, I am a member of the Barnes Advisory Staff and deal with the 458 caliber a lot ... just in case someone wondered about my source of info ...

I clearly stated the Spire point 300gr X bullet. The email that I got from barnes said that the FN X was made expressly for 45/70 lever guns and the 300gr SP X was used for bolt guns in high power 458 cal rifles. I was told that the 300gr SP X would expand down to 1400fps and that if I started out with a MZ of 1900fps it would expand out to 250 yards.
