I noticed a slight rattle in my 450 Dakota on my last hunt. I thought it was just the follower even though I have never heard it before. Today I was cleaning the rifle and found that the magazine was loose in the stock. Further inspection showed that the front of the magazine was dented from shooting with Cup point solid bullets. A little work with a brass hammer and I was able to pound them out. The recoil had bent the metal just enough to make it loose in the stock...nothing serious but enough to piss a guy off. Anyhow, it may be worth taking a look at your magazine once in a while if you shoot flat point solids. I was amazed at the beating it took. ****************************************************************** R. Roscoe, I believe that Heym have a system that utilises ribs in the back left and right hand side of the magazine box that engages into the extractor groove of the case which prevents the cartridges moving forward under recoil. The other fix is to have ribs solded into the magazine box that contact the shoulder of the case. I also believe that Heym have the front of their magazine box on springs in their dangerous game bolt actions, which prevents battering of the projectiles. Regards, Michael. Fill the space in front of the magazine box with epoxy when bedding to prevent damage. Steelbed in that area will do it, or solder a steel backing plate on the front of the box and then bed that tight too, for overkill.

The CPS's are irrelevant to the result. Have to reinforce the box. ------------------------------- Will / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. Good point. Pun intended. Pointier bullets than the CP's would be even worse. Even roundnose softs and solids are "pointier" than the CP's. So, who built that 450 Dakota and did not reinforce the front of the magazine box? Even a proper bedding job would prevent the damage.

Could be however I never had the problem until I started shooting flat point solids and Barnes X bullets. I will add some bedding as RIP recomends. ****************************************************************** R. Aha! just as I suspected, Dakota uses lead bottom metal, I don't find that surprising in this day and time, the bean counters love those short cuts, but a flat faced cup point denting bottom metal is a heinaous (did I spell that right?) offense on their part .. Probably the best thing to do is glass the gap between the front of the box and the stock, Gawd forbid! I may take you up on that! After looking at the magazine again, there were 3 dents from each of the bullets in the magazine. I now believe the damage was caused from the more pointed X-bullets. The metal is really quite heavy, much more so than a factory M-70 type. ****************************************************************** R. Heavy yes, but very soft.

You should expect the bullet to seat back as opposed to denting the bottom metal...I suspect that you could harden the metal or have someone harden it...actually Dakota should harden it or replace it, no excuse for that kind of shoddy production, especially at the price they get for those guns....
