Just wondering. I have thought about building a slug gun with a threaded barrel, chambered like a regular rifle, and projectiles seated normally in a brass case. It has not been done recently except by Ross Seyfried. Still...I just have to know. ...Catter

Unless it was a bolt action shotgun I dont belive it would be able to withstand the pressures because in my thought I would think the pressures would be signifigantly higher. Ive thought about the same idea and it wouldnt be a shotgun anymore it would be a big bore rifle. Good Shooting

If you make a rifled bolt gun... and shoot 12ga metal cased rounds.... haven't you just built a 70+ caliber rifle /destructive device?

I belive that there was a comercial bolt action 12ga slug gun made several years back. I'm thinking that it was a Mossberg? Not exactly sure though. I don't think that you would even need the sporting purposes exemption as long as it could chamber and fire a regular 12ga round and the barrel was marked 12ga. You could chamber it for a 3 1/2" shell to really get some powder capacity. I just got some Brass 2 3/4" 12ga cases in today. I don't think they make them longer though. 50 BMG's are pleantiful and cheap though. where would you find an action that big to start from? I wonder what the mossberg action would take for pressure. I have an old one in the safe, but you have to be careful when working the bolt or it can get screwed up.

Well I have seen a FN combi with a rifled 12 ga. The loaded ammo was 900 grains hard casts stoaked in brass cases. The rifle barrel were 9,3X74R / JOHAN

Savage Browning Mossberg all make 12 gage bolt action threaded barreled 12 ga slug guns. There is no reason you could not use brass caseing in them but why. With some of the new sabot rounds pushing a 300 gr 45 bullet to 2000 plus. You have a 200 yard slug gun.

Hubel, how did you expand you 700HE cases after turning the belt? Fireform? did you have to anneal first?

Those Mossberg bolt action shotguns were bolt activated, alright, but don't get them confused with real bolt actions on the line of the M98, M70, CZ or even (shudder!) Rem 700. They are very weak, even more so than a Krag and not, repeat not suitable for pressures any greater than a normal 3.5" 12 ga. If you have to hunt with a shotgun in your state, stick with the market available slugsters. They're very accurate and, as pointed out above, can reach out as far as you ought to be shooting anyway. Now if you wanted to machine up your own version out of steel stock and just enlarge it to hold the shell and leave in all the features tham make the M98 or the M70 so desirable, you could really have a 12 ga. from Hell but please give two weeks notice before touching it off so I can sell tickets to the show.

LAR45-I first annealed BMG cases then used expanders in 3 steps to get to .620 from .510. Then annealed again, and went to .700 with long expander. Then used my cartridge lathe to make start of the belt shoulder, with tool. Then swaged case to size with special resize die made from a 700 Nitro resizer, that I reworked. To get extra diameter for 12 guage have a fifth expander for those cases.Ed.

Damn, Ed, that is some subtle and masterful machining! I hold my hat under my chin in awe and respect. The government should be glad you put that effort into reloading and not into bank robbery. Well done, that man!

DieselDude-We are in the process of rounding up an action and barrel for load testing.Needs lots of dough to make it go faster. My internal ballistics math already tells me what it will do, and testing verifies it, shows how to get actions to feed.Testing sets proper size for reamers and resizers. I have seen the 12 ga.from HELL and it hangs on the wall in Patties Pawn Shop in Shelbyville,Tn. It is a Model 97 Winchester with a 58" barrel. The barrel wall looks to be 3/16th" thick at the muzzle. It was built for Turkey Shoots by a gunsmith in N.C.{name unknown}. It would truely be hell to carry that gun in the field. WC

Ed, Thank you for the link. However, you need your own website! I like seeing the development of wildcats like yours. I think it is good for our shooting sports.

The original 12 guage from hell was a concept of mine that used a belted .50BMG case ( ala Hubel 458) and a 12 guage weight foreward bullet about 2000 grs. I wanted to try it in both a smooth bore barrel and possibly a rifled tube with std weight bullets( once I sorted out the legalities). The action will be a McBros repeater.I've done nothing on this as of yet! Ed- put me down for 20 cases!-Rob [ 04-22-2003, 08:58: Message edited by: Robgunbuilder ]
