Hi friends! Ten years ago I bought a Weatherby Mk V cal. .460 Wby. Mag. rifle. Later I mounted a leupold aim-point and a 4.5x-scope on this gun. Recoil was so stiff that I recently decided to buy a custom made stock. I wanted a really heavy and ergonomic stock for cutting perceived recoil like the coil-chek stock of a-square. Now I got it and I am impressed how great this new stock works. This gun ist really tamed, a pleasure to shoot!

I think that I'll take my .460 to Namibia within the next ten month. I'm interested to test the .460 on kudu, gemsbok and zebra. Handloads with 450gr X-Bullets will be my choice of ammo.

I'm very interested in field reports of the .460 Wby. Mag. Is there anybody who has used the .460 for hunting? Results?

I wish you all a loud "Weidmannsheil" from Germany! Keep your powder dry!!

I can only agree with your assessment of the factory stock on Weatherby rifles. With stout loads of that caliber its hardly manageable, rendering the rifle a worthless piece of junk.
A well-designed stock can really help tame the 460, making it as pleasant to shoot as a medium weight sporting rifle in 30-06.
Much of the 460's bad reputation comes from the original Weatherby stock design.

I have just posted a related question about A-Square's "coil-chek" stock design on the German webboard of Wild und Hund, so I am glad that you implicitly have answered it here :-). I wonder what other people's experiences (not aesthetic perceptions - bodily felt experiences ! [Big Grin] ) with this stock were.

my custom stock was made by theo jung (lohmar). it has really cut a huge amount of perceived recoil. i did not expect such a big difference. the coil-chek stock should be as effective as my custum stock.

recoil of my .460 is now comparable to a standard .375 H+H Mag. rifle.

Gru!

The 460 WBY cartridge is a good one when loaded down to no more than 2400 fps. Basically your duplicating the 458 Lott with it's excellent reputation. I would use 500 gr woodleighs SN and solids, but load it down. You can use it out to 200 yrds if you have to. There have been way too many reports of bullet failure in 460 WBY's in Africa when used at the factory 2650 fps levels. Good stock design makes a world of difference in a Big bore. I'd also replace the WBY muzzel brake with a Vias. That will help alot to tame the recoil. -Rob

thanks for your reply concerning velocity! i also prefer 2400fps. this will help to prevent bullet failure and the pressure is kept down. in my experience x-bullets should be able to handle velocities above 2400fps as they don't explode even at very high velocities. my experience with woodleigh was not as good as with the barnes. woodleigh has a good weight retention but at higher velocity it mushrooms so large that penetration suffers. but it is still a good bullet and better than any conventional soft point.

Hi All,
Could someone please explain the bullet failure thing for me?
To be more specific, an X-bullet out of a 300 mag at over 3000 feet per second, you don't hear much about bullet failure, the x-bullet almost always performs as advertised, but a relatively slow 2600 feet per second bullet absolutely fails out of a 45 caliber. Whats up with that?

When I was playing with George Hoffmans 460, I loaded some rounds down to 2300 FPS wit a 500 gr. bullet and to my surprise it actually kicked less than my 416 or 375 it seemed to me, and at that low pressure it would be understandable that the recoil would be much less...

It gave me a completely new respect for the caliber and thats plenty of power to stop anything on this planet...It is basically a 458 Lott that kicks like a 375, not a bad combo...
