What can I make in a large bore on a 270 win action???

Anything that is 375 H&H length, but you need to cut the port a bit.

A 9.3X62 would be easy.

Any of the short mags like a 338 Win Mag, 416 Taylor or 458 Win Mag are just a little more difficult.

A long mag like a 375 HH or 416 Rem is quite a bit more difficult.

It is usually cheaper to find an original magnum configuration action than to open a standard action. The long magnum actions are scarce but can be found if you look long enough.

the conversion is really simple. Mill the follower 1/2 the difference in body diameter, and open up the boltface. We did an ex-270 into a 458Lott this summer at the shop. Box worked fine, and the owner has fired over 200 rounds of 458L thur it to date with ZERO issues. It goes to Mali in April.

How about the new 375 Ruger?

9.3X64 or .376 steyr. Easily done and tons of power!. Both basically equal to the .375 H&H.-Rob

If you want something unique howbout a 400 newton? Personally, I'd love to have a 35 newton on a pre 64.

Jeffe's line of AR carts should be OK too, no?

If you made me pick one, I'd go with the 416 Taylor.

Not to me, man, but the guys above my post did make some good points re: their relative potency vis-a-vis the venerable 375 H&H, so I threw them in. And, truth be known, to most people that do not frequent this forum, they would definitely qualify as "large bores".

So, hey, is "large bore" synonymous with "big bore"? Maybe I just snuck those in under the large bore definition. Yeah, that's my story...

Call Dennis Earhardt in Helena Montana, Frontier Gunshop. He will do a 411 Ryan, which is very similar to a 400 Newton. 300 grain Barnes at 2400, 400 grains at 2150. Standard size head and length. Case is a 375/400 belted, can be mde from 240 Weatherby brass, and Bertram is considering a special run of 1000 cases. It can be made light with very moderate recoil. Dennis has made a bunch on 77 Rugers. Just grind the extractor, rebarrel and go. Use 405 Winnie dies. Is a straighwalled case. I shot one, very pleasant, has flattened everything so far, up to elk. Should be fine up to big bears, but not qualified as a stopper on dangerous game. A 9.3x64 would be cool, as would a 416 taylor.

How about the Whelens? Starting with the 35 whelen,cheap brass& good bullets. Easy one in my book.

sell/swap it if you want to do a mag, i would think, unless you got a screaming deal on it

since there's nil difference in work, the 458 lott might be a little more "practical" ( I said PRACTICAL in relation to big bores) than the 458 AR ...

same with the capstick/470AR

and a 9,3x62 is falling off the turnip truck easy
