I'm about to have a 404J built and needed some input on what is the better stock to use: A low comb or a high comb. My rifle will be fitted with a 1.5x5x20 scope and a rear "ghost ring" type peep. I have heard high comb stocks distribute recoil better than lows, but really aren't needed for smaller objective scopes. Then I look at all the old British express bolt rifles and they have low combs. Thoughts? Thanks! Adam 30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.

Adam: I didn't have a 404 built, but bought a new Heym bolt in 404 and I couldn't have a better fit for me if it would have been custom. I have a 1.5 x 5.5 Zeiss scope on it in QD mounts. Look at the Heym USA website under bolt rifles and you will see their stock configuation.....I think it's close to perfect. Gary DRSS NRA Lifer SCI DSC

The older Brit patterned stock was not designed for a scope. If you are going to shoot mostly w/ the scope, then I would go straight or higher comb. My frined just received his 404j from my riflesmith & he is going w/o scope mounts & went w/ a low comb for the iron sights. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

I make all my DGRs set up for iron sights, and they all have TAlley QD mounts..I can shoot a low combed stock with a scope as well as I can shoot a high combed stock with a scope, but not visa versa..You cannot get down on the irons with a high comb unless you install a high ugly rear and front sight... Everyone that has tried one of my rifles so set up was very pleased and didn't know the difference until I told them.. You have to split the difference, a little higher than an English rifle but lower than a scoped rifle..It works for me...but I was raised on M-70 low combs (early on)and Weaver came out with a scope and give all my family a 2.5X one Christmas..Bill Weaver and Dick Shaw were family friends of my family and my wifes family... We learned to shoot scopes on low comb rifles and all came to the conclusion the only thing one has to do is put the cross hair on an animal and SQUEEEEEZE the trigger, heaven forbid, now I have dropped the holy grail!
