Legal Caliber In USA?
Seems like somewhere in my browsing I ran across a BATF regulation that restricts caliber in modern, smokeless rifles to 0.50".

Is that correct? And if so, how does one go about owning a 577 T Rex in the USA?

PSE do a search of the site and/or call BATF. This has been discussed ad nauseum!-Rob

Not correct, calibers larger than 50 are legal, it is the transporting of the ammo that is tricky. BATF considered it military ammo and restricts the transport on planes and such.

Actually, calibers over a bore diameter of 0.500" are regulated as destructive devices by the ATF unless given specific exemption as "sporting calibers."

The airline transport problem as to do with the treaties we signed that define ammunition for calibers over 50 as being controlled by munitions export regulations.

One of the reasons I decided that the .470 NE was big enough Wink

STOP!
Sporting arms are an entirely different thing than weapons (of war)

Any new rounds, above .500 BORE require eval by the ATF techincal division. They can be either declared sporting rounds, or exceptions to DD, or just a DD.

The 700 Hubel, 600 OK, and the 500 Magnum, Express, and Flanged are ALL classified as sporting rounds.

Now, the tricky part.

The GUN must also be sporting ... which means that NOT just because the caliber it okay that the rifle is. For example, a 223 is obivously a sporting round, but it can be in an automatic (real) that requires it to be a class 3 weapon.

So, if some gangbanger was going to make a 600OK revolver, it is likely to be considered a DD, even though its a legal round, due to nature of the GUN.... EXACTLY like the "StreetSweeper" that was retroactively declared a DD.

Its NOT cut and dried, and NO WEAPONS are involved, rather sporting arms.

I have been drooling over that site for quite some time now. If I had the money I would seriously get one of those. I live in the next town over from where they are located, maybe they will let me get some range time with one of em? Oh well, it's always nice to dream.

Sorry for the jack, now back to your scheduled thread programming...

Thats right nothing over 1/2" in rifles. I've heard that before. How about the biggest rifle ever made. It shoots a 1200gr bullet. I don't know the diameter of that bullet. I guess it could be a 1/2".
The .600 N.E. shoots a 610 Bore Dia. bullet thats more then 1/2"

Even the .750JDJ and .950JDJ are classified as "sporting" rounds.

1" bore, shoots a 3 oz lead ball over 500 gr. of Fg. I hardly every "race" it. Mostly it sits on the coffee table.
