I know that everyone has their favorites, mine just happens to be Weatherbys, brunettes, Jeeps and Pepsi. I won't knock yours if you take it easy on mine Wink

The biggest caliber I had before a couple of week's ago was a 378, so this 460 took me into the big-bore world big time. I was pretty nervous taking that 1st shot, (I'm only 5'11 and 175 lbs.) but with the accubrake it was a non event. My unbraked 378 is a wicked tart by comparison.

Well I've put 25 rounds through it so far and am impressed with the results. What a power house. I got in some range time with my first hand loads. 450 grain Barnes X with 110 grains IMR 4350 (middle of the road according to the Barnes manual). The accubrake and the hefty weight of the rifle make it very manageable.

100 Yards showed the following results once I got her sighted in where I wanted. I think this cartridge is a capable 350 yard round with an aerodynamic bullet. What surprised me is that I loaded two 600 grain Barnes originals and they printed a full 8 inches lower at 100 yards than the 450. Again I was using 4350 and a middle of the range charge.

The groups are probably an inch and half to inch and three quarter, but unlike so many posters, I've never been much more than a 3/4 inch guy even with my swift or 22-250. I'm just an average shooter I think.

Anyway I didn't think this was too shabby for me and for my 1st true big bore. The only problem I see is that this gun is going to be hard on scopes, the Leupold magnification ring froze up, and I did get some movement (sliding in the rings) and have since used epoxy on the rings and hope that helps. It's got a Bushnell Elite on it now while the Leupold goes back to factory.

Aside from the push feed action, that there must be the best set-up for Africa,a 460 with a muzzle-break.If everone based there decision on performance alone, this would be it.

LRH,

I head up north 93 above Alamo on the Hiko/Lund cutoff and call around the flats between Sunnyside and Lund. I like to get out of town and away from people and usually camp for a night or two. Didn't have any takers today though. I've heard they are denned up and not on the move as much, but I'm nothing more than an amatuer when it comes to calling. It sure is fun though!

That's a pretty rifle. The big-bores tend to shoot pretty well, it is that big fat pipe sticking out there that does it. Smiler

May I suggest a Burris 1x scout scope. I have maybe 500 rounds thorugh mine now and it is still going strong. I have a .500 A-Square.

;;;;;kiethv35;; jumping thumb Very impressive .....The 600 gr only 8" low isn,t as much as I would have thought...The power change ring on my Leupolds have kindof froze up quite a few times on my 458,s...With brute strength and ignorance I,ve got it moveing again ...Almost had to resort to channel locks once ......It wouldn,t suprise me if that Bushnell holds up better than the leup.... I,m a blond ,CZ ,Dodge and coffee kind of guy , and will turn my 458lott into a 460 this summer ...Did you chronograph your loads... Have you checked out stunt pilot 2,s posts on his 460 safari The 450 gr X worked perfact for him......with the way you shoot it is an ideal brn bear rifle also !!!

Nice Shootin Tex…..

Keithv35,

Are you ever planning on chronographing any of your loads? I’d be curious to see just how fast you can get those 600 grainers going? I don’t know if anyone has ever posted chronographed data on the 600s in the 460? I think it would be interesting to compare the 600s in the 460 to 600s in the 500 ASQ (Just to see how much of a difference the larger bore makes in velocity gains).

Gumboot458, didn’t you have a 500 ASQ?

I’m a Dodge, Ruger, Brunette, beer kinda guy myself….but as long as the truck starts, the gun shoots straight, the woman is laid-back & easy going, and the beer is cold I’m happy regardless of the labels……..

Congrats on the new toy..

Matt V.

In my 21" barreled 500 A-2.. 116 gr of 4320 pushed the 600 gr Barnes orig soft points and A-Square bullets , and Barnes belly button solids at right at 2380 -2430 fps...... The load I prefered was 108 gr of 4320 it went 2200 fps and was alot more fun to shoot.......The A-Sq. manuel lists 115 gr of 4320 as max now !!!!!!! As a side note the Barnes belly button solids worked find for what I used them for ......

Matt,
I've got an Oehler 35p that I really haven't fully figured out how to use, only tried once, but I've got some different loads worked up and will chrono all of them here soon.

Barnes lists my 600 grain with 4350 as 2260-2380 fps. I have some RL19 that they list as nearing 2500 fps with 107 grns. I'll work up a few rounds and see how they do. I bought a couple of boxes of tsx 500 grains and want to see how they compare. I also have factory 450 X grain from Wby and 3 boxes of 450 Barnes solids from Superior Ammunition. It will be interesting to compare velocities from each of these with my semi mild handloads.

Anyone have any suggesions for Remington 405 grain? They are dirt cheap at 18 bucks a hundred, so I have two hundred of those to play around with too.

Gumboot, thanks for referencing stuntpilot2's African report, I went back and re-read it, lot's of good results from the 450 X.

Thanks

Keith v35,

Also like the 460 Wea for shooting fun. Got a great deal from a local dealer where some deer hunter had bought it and fired three rounds.
But don't like the feel of it, the push feed, and the safety mechanism for big game hunting. Not just a personal thing, but I think safety too.

My 2 cents worth.Had a few of the 460's,they shoot great, but that damn 378 seems to kick the worst?!Had a 460 in a Brown Precision Kevlar stock and it kicked so hard, broke to sets of rings and cracked stock! But,it had a 22" LW barrel and weighed 7 pounds! I then added a brake and that solved the problem! Shot a Caribou at 280 yds with a 500sp...Hit him in the rear and he didnt need field dressing! Smiler Scopes? Leupold Compact 2.5-Indestructable!

LRH, The coyotes were left undamaged from my last trip!

Let me know if the're any bargains at Cashman Field, I've been spending all my gun money lately on components for the 460. I've got about 200 rounds loaded and another 300 brass. Not sure what I would ever need 500 rounds of 460 for but I've got it!

SafariKid,

I couldn't agree more, my 378 is vicious....in fact next week it's on its way to get a brake. But I'm not sure it would compare to a 7 lb 460 with no brake!! Hopefully one day I'll be posing my 460 over a buffalo like your 600ok!

A few.

I found 4 5-packs of Kynoch .470 Nitro Express for $ 15 total.

A couple boxes of Speer Grand Slam .375 H&H for $ 21.50 each.

And Bobby bought a Browning .458 Win Mag for our upcoming trip.

The later 378s with the 416 contour barrel and accubrake are pussy cats. Same deal with 30 and 338/378

The early lightweight Jap 378s don't recoil......rather, they launch a personal attack on the shooter Big Grin

I agree on the comparison of the light .378 vs. the heavy .460.

My .378 is German and the contour is as light as a .300. I'd rather shoot my Jap .460 20 times than my .378 3 times.

Hey Mike, I didn't know this was you. You're 460's ought to be getting in soon right?

I have some more 450 Barnes loaded up and am heading to the range this afternoon.

Once my 378 get's back I've loaded up a bunch of 300 grain Failsafes that I picked up on closeout from MidwayUSA. I've heard there have been soome complaints with accuracy with these rounds but I have enough hopefully to develop some good loads. I started with IMR 7828 and will see how they perform.

Hope they get here this year and then of course have the 4 to 8 weeks paper work. Once I get this pair I will then have owned 4 460s. If you get to 24HourCampFire sent a PM to AussieGunWriter. He now lives in America and bought the last 460 I had. He will tell you what they do do when correctly bedded. Using a bag of lead shot behind the gun that rilfe shoots .3" (Yes .3"s) with 115 grains IMR 4350 and 500 Hornadys. Does right on 2500 f/s. I have have dirct involvement with several 460s and 115 grains IMR 4350 and 500 Hornady can be virtually regarded as a test load. If they don't shoot that load then usually there are propblems with scope, mounts or bedding.

Hey Mike, I didn't know this was you. You will also find me on here as Mike McGuire and Mike378. I go through ban cycles Big Grin

7828 works well in the 378 with 300s

I have some more 450 Barnes loaded up and am heading to the range this afternoon. Are you still using the 110 grains of IMR 4350

In most 460s 85 grains of 4064 will give you a nice 2000 f/s with 500 Hornadys and very accurate. No fillers required. That is about 20 grains less than max that can be used with 4064.

I remember firing that 460 now owned by Aussie Gunwriter at the range with Mike.........The recoil lifted me a couple of inches out of the chair Big Grin

And another time, Mike got back from a day at the range, with a Jap 378 and phoned me laughing, and said listen to this, the internal lenses of the scope had all been smashed from the recoil Wink

Keith looks he might have a fair chance of lying the rifle across the bonnet of the car and blasting some roos. Although he is only using reduced loads at the moment Smiler

I think you still clearly remember the 460 being used like a big 270 with the sandbags on the bonnet of the car. Of course the result was different to the 270 impact Big Grin

Keith would enjoy spotlight shooting roos with the 460.

Tell me about woodleighs....I can get barnes X for the same price as them in the states here, but are the worth a try in the 460 or 378? And I've moved up two grains now in 4350...We'll see how they chrony.

I like non belted, brunettes, GMC's and Coke.

That 460 is one whale of a cartridge. Impressive.

I am anxiously waiting for my 416 Rigby to get back from it's tune up. I know I won't be able to resist cranking up the pressures a little in that big old case and getting thumped around.
Just need to see what she'll do with some 370gr bullets.

I figure after running up the loads a little, the standard loads won't seem so bad.

Keith,

The male Red roo is about 200 pound and the male Grey is about 150 pound. The females are mxuh smaller.

I have never used Woodleigs except for a few on paper. Out here they are much the same price as the big bore Hornadys.

Shooters that shoot Sambar deer (a bit smaller than ELk) use then quite a lot.
