FN supreme bigbore conversion?? Login/Join

I've spied an almost new 308 FN supreme sporter sitting at a local gunshop. Is this action suitable for a Bigbore conversion to 375HH or 404 Jeff? If so what sort of work would be required.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

What's the magazine box length? That's your answer sitting right there.

If it only "just" fits a 308 case, then I'm sorry but the chances are slim

You could fit a WSM 375 or WSM 404 in it without too much work

You might even fit a 375 or 416 Ruger into it !

It will NOT be cheap

I'm betting that it is a normal length FN action with maybe a spacer in the rear of the magazine box. Never knew FN making a short action.

Assuming it is a normal action the box will need to be made longer the bolt face opened and rail work probably.

YOu could always buy new bottom metal. Yes I think it could be done but cheaper and easier ways exist.

As usual just my $.02

FN sold 375 H&H and 458 Magnums made on the same action as that 308; just opened up for the larger cases. It won't be cheap to convert it. You could buy a nice Whitworth in either caliber for far less and have the same thing.

For the cost you could buy a comercial FN mauser already in 458. Cabelas has one listed on their web page. And then there are the Browning safari FN mausers (basically the same gun), they seem pretty common in 458, less so in 375. There's been a few recent threads on these rifles.

Man wish I could find that at my LGS! I have been looking for a short action CRF for ages with no luck.

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

A FN or MKX, Daly 798 type action for the 22-250, 243, 308 is a normal 30-06 with a spacer in the back of the mag box ans shorter follower. The action is the same.

I haven't had a chance yet to measure the box length. If it is a 30-06 length action with a spacer maybe a candidate for conversion to 9.3x62 might be a better choice & just buy another rifle already in a bigger bore.

It will be a standard 30-06 cut. FN didn't make special actions for short calibers. But there was a single shot action with no cut at all. Very few.

For anything bigger than a 375 I think you would be better off building from a CZ550.

Yes, it is suitable for the .375 H&H. Open action, open bolt face, use Blackburn or Sunny Hill bottom metal.

A great option would be the .425 Westley Richards.

Why not a 416 Taylor? Easy to fit into a standard mauser. I changed out the follower to a Ruger mag follower on a FN supreme 30-06 and did only a tiny bit of rail work to make mine work perfectly.
