My pet load of 74 grains of AA2230 powder with 450 grain Swift bullet gives me velocities over 2200fps. With the 450grain TSX bullets I am unable to compress the powder enough to seat the bullets deep enough to get a good crimp in the upper cannelure. Any suggestions on different powder with less volume with TSX bullet that I could get the same velocities. That's the problem with these short cases & long bullets. That 2230 powder is already about as dense as you can get unless you go to a faster powder but that has issues too. This is one reason I use to like their 400grn but I don't think they make it anymore. If your throat & mag box allow, seat it out to sit on top of the charge & crimp into the bullet with a Lee factory crimp die.

Thanks, I have done what you said, I can compress the load and crimp between the top two cannelures and it will fit the mag box and room enough before the lands of the barrel I figured with the double base powder that AA2230 is that it's not going to get any better with density of another powder. It is shootable as is and under recoil the bullet is not going to compress the load that is already compressed even though I don't have a strong crimp. Even though I've been reloading for 42 years my knowledge of all of the new powders, etc. is limited so thought one of you reloading guru's might have some good solutions to the problem. dirklawyer, I am running into a similar issue loading the 500 grain TSX bullets in the .458 Lott. Have you looked into using a drop funnel with a long tube to aid in getting the powder to settle better in the case? I just bought a 10 inch length of rubber tubing to see if I can duplicate one, and if this works to better settle the powder, perhaps I'll spring for the real deal. Let me know what you find and I'll do likewise. These damn .458 TSX monsters seem to really take up the case! -John

What is wrong with the 450 Swift @ 2300 FPS? A great performer at that velocity... I believe I use the same 74 gr of 2230 for about 2280 FPS (chrono; 24" barrel) with no pressure issues @ +100F. EZ

I have had good luck with 4198 Extreme in my Steyr in 458 Win Mag but that was with 500 gr. Woodleighs. When I first stated loading for the 458 I tried the old Barnes bullets in 500 gr. & got pressure issues. I haven't tried the new TSX bullets as the Woodleighs, both soft & solid, shoot cloverleafs at 50-75 yards, going out between 2100-2200 fps. Absolutely nothing at all. Been a Swift a-frame fan since they started production and it's my go to bullet 90% of the time in any calibre. But you know how it is there is this cute TSX bullet that I really want to reload also. You have to have some project your working up loads with or boredom starts to work in.
