First off let me say I don't hunt with my Weatherby, just marvel at the power by punching holes in steel and breaking big rocks.

I normally shoot Hornady 500 gr. slugs through my .460 Weatherby because they are the least expensive. In another thread a member commented that FMJ's are hard on the bore but Monolithic solids cost more yet produce less wear and tear.

I don't know if the jacket material is different on the Hornady FMJ's compared to the softpoints but it looks the same. Also, I have around 70 of the Speer AGS with Tungsten cores. Those have lathe-turned jackets that look like brass. In my unscientific tests those seem to penetrate deepest through timbers or steel plates.

Are there really big differences in wear and tear on the bore? I shoot maybe 100 rounds a year through it. (note where I live)

Cut one of each in half and look at the copper plated steel in the fmj. Then look at the gilding metal in the soft point and draw your own conclusions.

Shoot all the FMJs and Mono's you want, you will not wear the barrel out in your lifetime!

Nothing at all to worry with!

I've put 300 to 400 round through my 500 Jeffery in the first year. A lot doing load development. I can see that happening for one more year then expect it taper off to around 200 rounds a year. At that rate the barrel should last a decade at least ...
