Well it's been done; .416 Dakota, .404 jeffery (nothing wrong w/ the original), .450G&A. Lazzeroni offers a .416/.404 as well.

Very good point on the headstamp, I'm familiar with that requirement. I had forgotten about the Dakota line of cartridges as a possibility. I kind of like the versatility of the 416 and 458 family of cartridges. The 404 is a great cartridge, but is more limited on bullet wts etc. I am an avid handloader, a downfall in my case, I intentionally look for the more unique cartridges. It doesn't have to be fast to be effective as I have read from so many of the people here. I was about 20 steps from a beautiful Kriegoff 470 double(it was going for a steal because it'd been on the shelf for over 4 years), why 20 steps? I figure that's about how many it took to walk to the front of the church ahead of my now wife to say "I do". The double thing is on hold, but she's supportive of a bolt gun. I have to buy her another rifle though, and of course it can't be an ugley one...lol. This forum is a wealth of knowledge and experience for those that will take the time to listen. Thanks for the info, especially on the Dakota, brass is reasonable and correctly head stamped and it duplicates the grand old Rigby (except possibley in the pressure department).
