You mean ruger no 1 of course? Yes entirely possible and done many times. The guys who own them can probably give you a better run down on what the best approach is.
The most I can tell you is the maximum nitro express conversion possible is to the 577 nitro, although some don't think its sound gunsmithing.- Also JD jones has a 600cal wildcat he crams into them as well.

I beleive Bruce Bertram(~ brass)had one on a 500 nitro.Loads were about 125gns of Ar2209, which is the same as H4350 behind a 570gn woodleigh. That's all second hand info from a post made on this site about 6 years ago. Wait for the experts to weigh in...

am building one now in 500NE. all because i'd ordered a box of jeffery ammo and was sent this by mistake so ended up building a rifle around a 5pack of ammo but all it took was one look at those rounds.
is more of a chore than building a rifle on a mauser action but not too bad. the loading trough in both receiver and breech block has to be opened. hard to get the weight up as can't readily take a bbl much larger than their 458 w/o interferring with or having to modify the f/e hanger. i got a mcgowen bbl 16" long but w/ muzzle dia to match the ruger 458 and can use the quite inexpensive ruger swivel band and front sight - which are also some of the best looking available anyway. got a stock from great american (and i know a lot don't like them but this set is perfect. told them what was for and is densest pc of walnut i've ever seen). the parent cannibalized #1 was a 300 winmag so i got an extract for a 45-70 to modify. right now, the bbl is fitted, chamber cut but has to be yanked out for the extractor slot. needs f/e fitting, sights installed and it'd at least be shootable if not finished.
a lot of work but i'm expecting it to be well worth it when done. if i'd get off my lazy ass and finish it.
sorry, typo. 26" barrel, not 16". all the components so far come to 10# even and balance is perfect for carry, much better balance than a factory ruger #1H and the size of the butt and cheekpiece i'm expecting it to be much more pleasant to shoot in spite of the recoil being mathematically heavier.
I had Bowen do a conversion for me a few years ago to 470 NE. I started with a 458. They sent it to Labounty for reboring, then did the modifications, rechambering, etc. I also added a good pad and mercury tube to the stock. The gun looks exactly like it came from the factory, except for the pad, and larger hole in the barrel. Unfortunately, Labounty is not currently doing these, so rebarreling is about the best option now. And, I don't know if Bowen is doing rifle work any more according to their website: Please note: Due to shortages of certain parts (some now out of production) and the pending retirement of our reboring vendor, we regret to advise that we must decline orders for our rifle work at this time. As events unfold this year, we'll decide whether or not to offer these services again.

Ross Seyfried wrote of just such a conversion about 20 years ago. He had the barrel of a #1-H re-bored from .458" to .475", and modified the extractor to work with the rimmed NE case.

Cliff Didn't go out of business he sold the business and is now training the new owner . Now don't quote me on this but I believe the new owner is the very same guy cliff had working for him so if that is the case we could expect to see the same high end work sometime in the future..

Just a comment on boring out the 1-H 458 barrels. Ruger drills the quarter rib holes very deep in the barrel, and I would be leary about having the barrel bored out to a 470 or 500. I'd heard the older guns weren't drilled so deep, but can't confirm. I know the two 458 take off barrels I got had very deep holes.
It's a pity Ruger doesn't come out with a 470 NE, but I imagine they figure they won't sell enough to cover the tooling, especially considering the cost of factory fodder.

I sent my No.1 458 to Hamilton Bowen and it is now a 470 Nitro Express. If I remember right, the holes drilled in the barrel for the Ruger sight is the controlling factor as to the caliber it could be reboared to. If the holes are drilled too deep it limits the caliber without rebarreling the gun.

Reboring to 470 isn't a problem with the screw holes. But, if you want a 500, that's another story. Very few of the new ones will work, but the old ones will if you can find one before a certain serial #.
