Recoil Characteristics of Factory CZ-550 Stocks Login/Join

While reviewing previous posts regarding the CZ Safari Magnum rifle I found a question regarding the differences in felt recoil between the European style stock and the American style stock. In the series of posts I read no one really offered an opinion as to any perceived differences in recoil. Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

I own both, and differences are very small. I can only say based on a euro 416 Rigby, and American stocks on my 375 and 505 Gibbs; that the euro positions your head more "straight up". Which is nice if you have the factory rings, because they are tall(er). Either works for me, but I am still playing with iron sights doing 50yd loadwork. The best thing I can say, which is trite...is to shoot both in the same caliber if you can and let your shoulder and cheekbone tell you which to buy. If, I-F, I had to choose for all of them to match, I might lean towards the American, since the 505 only comes that way.

For me, the Am. has less perceived recoil. This may be, in part, due to less muzzle rise when shot than the hogback.

People more knowledgeable than I have claimed that the hogback is better from the recoil perspective. Having said that, recoil is subjective! I have two CZ's, one with the American style, and the other with the European. Unfortunately they are in different calibers, the American in 375H&H and the Euro in 416 Rigby, so I cannot really compare. Plus the 375 H&H is probably slightly heavier than the 416.

Will, this may also be due to the fact that the Euro guns weighs less. My take on this is if you are getting the .375, get the Euro gun. If you are getting a .416 or the .458, buy the American style stock. In the larger calibers, the extra weight helps tame the recoil but you don't want your .375 to be much over nine pounds and eight and a half would be even better.

To Bill's point, I have both and took both to Zim three weeks ago. Both are in .458 Win Mag. I hunted the entire time with the hogback stock. I like the way it feels and I "percieve" less recoil. I also like the way it looks. All that said, I am confident that you are going to hear views on both sides.

as an attorney friend of mine once said "...it could be argued either way...".
Both are well designed.

I only have the American in Rigby but it seems to have more muzzle jump than my American made guns.

I've got a hump-backed "Euro" ZKK-602 .416Rem and an "American" CZ-550 .458Lott and I suppose the difference has more to do with caliber then stock design..

Since many of you have mentioned the C-Z.
Does anybody know if one of the Limbsaver pre-fit recoil pads will fit a 550 american style 416 rigby? Or will I have to grind to fit? I should have my rifle by wednesday, but im curious now.

I follow Rule #62.

I know it is comparing apples to oranges, but my M70 416 Rem Mag really slaps me.

My Euro Stocked CZ 375 is a real pleasure to shoot. ???????

Fit means a lot.
