Gents,

Has anyone had E.R. Shaw do a re-barrel and chamber for them?

i've had them do 2 rifles for me both were 338winmag rugers and had them put 458 barrels on them. good price i thought it was under 400 for barrel fit and fitted with sights, and will shoot federal 400gr tbbc to 1 to 1.5in at a hundered yards. you could definatley go with a "better" grade barrel but i guess it depends on what you want. Like me am not planning on shooting a 458wm beyond 200yds so it works for me just fine. hope this helps.

Grizzinater...

Were any other modifications of your rifle required for feed and funtion, i.e. rail work etc...?

not at all the rugers will feed flawlessly, the winchester i had done took some polishing of the chamber to feed the blunt 500 grs. as for the ruger i just buy a used stainless 7mm,300,338 and have a stainless 458 barrel and in the old canoe paddle stock youll have a pretty bullet proof alaskan rifle, atleast in my opinion..

Grizzinater,
That's my plan exaxtly, except in stainless.
My stock is the lamanate. Did you cross bolt the stock?

Trophyhunter,
I made up a dummy 458-500 grain without powder and primer weight, and the round cycles nicely. Not sure of magazine spring being strong enough to feed live rounds though.
Maybe Grizzinnater can enlighten us about that.

Yes mine are all stainless also, i havent used the laminated stock and i like light rifles and find the old paddle synthetic stock be be very strong, just needs a better recoil pad.
as far as the spring goes it will be fine, plenty strong.. It is a great set up...let me know in you want any more info...

grizzinater,
You had stainless barrel installed on your stainless action, how does it look?
Is the barrel contour much different than the Ruger barrel?
How much stock work did you have to do after rebarreling?
Could you post some pictures?

I think you can get a Krieger barrel plus installation for close to that, including squaring the action to the barrel ...

I believe Krieger will do it for you, I may be wrong. I've heard good things about Krieger barrels but never owned one. Here's a link.
