OK...I've now got almost all of my components to reload the 470 and cut the costs of the REAL expensive Federals....but...where do you find the Sledgehammer solids? The Bear Claw softs are no problem, but I can't find the Sledgehammers. Did Speer replace them with the AGS Tungsten. I've do MANY web searches...can't find 'em. Help, please. Thanks. Gary B.

Yes AGS Tungston is a sledgehammer but I was not aware that they made them in .470 cal. I know the Bear claw is in .470, correct me if I am wrong.... I hope you are shooting a modern .470 such as a Searcy with them, and not an English rifle with the Bear Claw as I have been told by some of my cohorts that they run pressure up in a double, but thats heresay only... Most doubles are set up to shoot Woodleigh softs and solids and that is where I would start and they work on anything Africa has to offer and are a bit tougher in softs than the Bear Claws in my experience...Also its usually a snap to get Woodleigh softs and solids to print together as they have the same weight and configuration.... After you have everything working with Woodleighs then you can play with the other stuff, as least that my advise for its worth. The double is a whole nuther ball game.

The Sledgehammer solids are not available as components, but only in loaded ammunition. I'm not sure why, but something tells me the reason may be that Federal/Speer are pushing the $5 apiece tungsten solids instead of the Sledgehammers.

Ray, my Merkel came regulated with the Sledgehammers...not the Woodleighs. One of the few Merkels that I've heard regulated with that load. I was only looking for those to duplicate the factory Federal load, then move on to higher ground. I'm going to try the cup points mentioned on your other post...folks seem to like them. MR....Speer is awful proud of those AGS's aren't they? Can't keep reload costs down buying $5 bullets! Gary B.

Quote: Gary: I was told by GSI that my Merkel .470 was also regulated with the TB Sledgehammers. I haven't shot it enough to get into handloading for it, and I used Federal Premium Safari ammo with TB Bear Claws and Sledgehammers for my buffalo hunt with it. I was able to place right and left barrels within one inch horizontally at 50 yards with them. On the buff, one TB Bear Claw through the top of the heart at 35 yards did the trick, stopping on a rib on the other side with, I believe, around 85% of its weight remaining after breaking a leg bone and punching through a rib on the near side. He made it about 60 yards before dropping for good. [image]http://home.netcom.com/~chingesh/2002Buffalo.JPEG[/image]
