Gents,

Like most everyone else here, when MidSouth ran that big sale on Hornady bullets (well, they didn't say Hornady, but we all knew the deal) a couple months back, I bought some bullets for my .416 Taylor.

Finally got around to loading some of these 'new' bullets and noticed the cannelure is located in a slightly different location.

Prior to this batch, when I seated these bullets '416 Taylor deep' the cannelure was several thousands of an inch above the neck of the case. These new ones look like they were made just for the Taylor!

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about, but like an idiot, I got the two loaded rounds reversed. The newer bullet should be on the left, nearer the 'bag-o-bullets' from MidSouth, instead it's on the right, closer to the older box from Hornady.

I'm not complaining! In fact I like the new position. This is probably old news, and you guys have discussed it to death. But, has anyone else noticed this? Which factory cartridge is the 'new' cannelure position designed for?

Thanks.

I got rid of some of those that you have now. I needed the other type and could not use the ones you don't like as well. I've had this problem with them off and on over the years. As you can imagine, when I seat to the cannelure on the ones you like in my .416 Remington... well, it just doesn't work out. If you really like the others, I assure you there are plenty more out there.

Darn, it's more complicated than I'd hoped.

Need to figure out how to insure I get the bullets with the 'lower' cannelure.

It doesn't actually matter, as I don't crimp them anyhow, but they sure look better seated to the cannelure.

BW,
Even as I read your question I am measuring a 400gn. Hornady. I find that of the boxes I have, all bullets measure .548 to.550 from the bottom of the cannelure to the bottom of the base. It definately appears that the new ones you have are considerably more "Taylor" made! [Big Grin]
Sorry I don't have any answers for you, but I plan to send off an e-mail to Hornady. I also do not crimp into the cannelure, and, with an overall loaded length of 3.330 for my chamber, find that my loads appear as the one in your picture on the left.
Am anxious to get my hands on a couple of boxes...they do look better.
best,
bhtr

bearhunt'r,

The ones from Mid South measure between .465 and .470 inch from bottom of cannelure to bottom of the bullet.

You mention getting a new 'box', I just want to remind you that these came in a 'bag.'

Thanks for checking your bullets, as I had loaded all my other versions.

Well, I remind you that both versions are "out there" and in quantity! I've been burned twice. It's also a bitch when the gun store doesn't want you opening boxes of bullets with their "you open it, you buy it" policy. When I contacted Hornady about this QUITE some time ago, their response was that, oh yes, we had a run of bullets where the die was off a bit... or something like that. Whatever. Anyway, all I know is, I need the short "front end" version, not the long "front end" version. I prefer to crimp my hunting loads, especially the "heavy" ones, so... well, that's my situation.

Russ,

Thanks again. If you get stuck with any of the wrong ones, post it here, and perhaps one of us 'Taylor types' will buy them from you.

I'd agree that crimping hunting loads is a good idea.

Nope, not stepping on my toes.

Course it hardly seems fair, seeing that your only a few hours from several K/Wal-Marts, Great Northern Guns, Mountain View Sports, etc...

[Smile]

Really though, I've got a couple hundred 'Taylor Friendly' Hornady's now. Trying to duplicate that group you can see in the picture above. Ran out of H4895 with those three bullets a long time ago, and finally managed to get to more cans of the stuff last week.

Gotta get busy at the loading bench and back out to the range...

This drove me nuts so I just abandoned Hornady softs altogether. [Mad] It just isn't worth it to me to deal with sh!t like this. I now practice with Barnes solids and x-bullets exclusively. Is it waaaay more expensive? Yes, but at least I know where they shoot and how they seat when I make 'em!
