Hoenig .460 G & A Login/Join

I have a chance to get a rifle made by Georgre Hoenig, chambered in .460 G & A.

Anybody heard of this rifle maker, much less the caliber? The rifle is made on a BRNO action and appears to be of superb quality.

Just curious if there is anybody out there that has one of these, or knows about them.

Thanks,

JW

The .460G&A is a terrific round; a .404 Jeffery necked up to .458".

If this is the same Hoenig as the fellow who designed the stock duplicator, it should be a fine rifle.

George did some fine work for me in the past. He has a side opening double rifle on the market he designed. First class work.

Mr. Hoenig also built Jeff Cooper's .460 G&A the rifle that Jeff calls "Baby".

I would want to have the dies that came with the rifle. I expect I would pounce on this rifle too. Wink

i'd have to go back and look in the guns and ammo issue in which the 460 G&A was first written up but i think hoenig built one of the very first of those rifles. seems walter abe built the very first one and hoenig built maybe the 2nd. would take a while to dig the issue out but i do recall his name being associated w/ it at a very early date (early relative to the creation of this wildcat). and yes, hoenig is a well-respected gunmaker (and not just rifles). i also recall a write up on a sporter he built on a winchester m52 to look like a brit express rifle. his stuff used to get featured a lot. most recently he designed a built his own twin bbl shotgun w/ a rather bizarre breeching system i still don't see the point in. i think they're on the order of $20k. were written up in a shooting sportsman magazine recently.

I saw those "rotary guns" - 25K gets you one, if you dare!

From what I can gather, Mr. Hoenig is one of those rare individuals that has the Cajones to essentially do what the hell he pleases - creatively speaking that is, of course. Apparently the story behind this series of rifles (all 8 of them) is that he wanted to build the ultimate mag-fed bolt gun, accomplished his mission, got bored and moved on to the next pursuit. Don't know the facts, but seems logicial to conclude given his proclivity to push design limits.

I'll tell you this, that dang'd thing is absolutely flawless. The classic lines and good looks camo-over the high tech design of this piece...Triple recoil lugs that for instance are completely covered by the stock. Stippled sight plane on the quarter rib, etc, etc...Great mix of classic and modern technology.

Ok, ok, I'm getting fired-up about this rifle - I'll quit!

Youthful enthusiasm you could call it!

i think that was the walter abe gun and i believe was #1. but i seem to recall the next one was on a magnum mauser action and hoenig did it and was, to me, more attractive. smoother, less harsh looking. more classic express appearance. i've run across that article in recent history while looking for something else but i doubt now i could find it again w/o just starting at ground zero and working fwd.

I stand corrected. The Walter Abe .460 was on a Rem M/30 action & the Hoenig guns were on Brevex Magnum Mauser actions. I am referencing my 1984 copy (which i finaly was able to find)
of "Big Bore Rifles" Guns & Ammo action series #1 page 74.

Also in the 1970, 71, or 72 GUNS AND AMMO ANNUAL had a write up on it. The rifle built by Mr. Hoenig was on a Brevex action. About 20 years ago I had a stock cut and inletted by Mr. Hoenig. Does anyone know if he still does such work? Thanks.

Does anone have an accurate chamber or reamer drawing of this cartridge that they can post?

Since Donnelly's book isn't to scale, it isn't of much use for visualization.

for chamber/reamer specs go to www.clymertool.com and after doing an indian jones to find it, under "reamer design" or something will come up w/ all the dimensions. ptg probably offers reamers as well. my recollection is all they did was neck the 404 up but perhaps also moved the shoulder fwd. don't recall.

I live in Boise, ID across town from George. There was another one of his fine bolt-action rifles in .416 Rigby FS at the last gun show a few weeks back - very nice work... and then his rotary Round Rifles are in a league all of their own! George does some extraordinary work. He had a double in .225Win and another in 9.3x74R. He told me that he uses barrels by Jim Baer (Half-Moon Barrels) out of Montana. A few years back, he gave me a copy of the winter '98 "Der Waffenschmied" that featured this rifle and well as some other articles (Summer '97 Double-Gun Journal p 35-46,56. He use to work for Pachmayr and Weatherby when he came to this country. The phone number listed on his brochure is 208-375-1116
Hope this helps! Smiler

PS: I believe that another of my friends has a .360(?) G&A custom for sale if anyone's interested

Thanks, couldn't make the web site work right, but found a picture of the Short and long version in the1973 Guns and Ammo annual.

It has an article as well. Rifle #1 was on a rem 30 by Walter Abe and #2 by George Hoenig on a brevex, both with A&M barrels

don't know what's up w/ their site; used to be you clicked on the bar "database search and reamer customization" and got buttons for pistol, belted, rimmed, rimless, weatherby, etc and worked your way from there. i think they've been sold or something in recent history and must be redoing things. sorry 'bout the false lead. i shoulda looked 1st.

i bet is in barnes cartridges of the world. will look.

To the best of my knowledge this is the same Hoenig that invented a stock duplicating machine years ago. My understanding is that he is absolute perfectionist. He would not sell the stock duplicator unless the buyer agreed to come and spend several months learning how to use it correctly.

I have not seen his rifles in person. But I have no doubt they are special.
