I have been thinking about the 404 Jeffery and its bullet weights. I may be way out of the truth here so correct me if I'm wrong.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to have 450 grains bullets for those? I mean with modern powders they can propell a 400 grainer to over 2600 with no pressure problems. They have great case capacity holding 117.16 grains of water compared to, for example, the .458 Lott that holds 106.4.

My thought was that it should be possible to throw a 450 grainer to something like 2350.. Or would the bullet be too long? Pressure too high?

Any thoughts on this subject?

Regards

/Johan

I just wish Hornady or someone else would make an inexpensive 400gr bullet in .423.

358 Norma,
I bet you that Woodleigh would do that if several of us made the request...It would certainly be a grand bullet and it would do an easy 2400 or better, I am betting 2500 FPS without a rumble....I know the 400 gr. Bridger is as long as a 450 Woodleigh would be...The 450 Woodleigh RN worked in the 416 Rem. for me last year like a charm and up graded the 416 to about what one would expect out of perhaps a 458 Lott in observed results on Buffalo.....certainly more effective than a std 458 Win. based on my use of them both but that's just my IMO based on half a dozen kills.....

Are there no cheap cast bullets available in .423 for throwing at the rifle range?

Sometime in the near future I hope to finalize a .404 cast-bullet design of about 375 grains with Mountain Molds.

Note that such a mold will cost as little as maybe $60.00, and give us the capability to make THOUSANDS of bullets for years to come. If one doesn't want to get too deeply into the casting side of things, bullets can be easily cast from an old cast-iron frying pan and hand-lubricated. It's not at all difficult, and the cast loads can be driven right to factory-eqivalent speeds or more without "leading" and without any of the other old wive's tales about cast bullets.

My Ruger #1 in .416 Rigby will shot 365-grain RCBS-design cast bullets at 2700 fps all day, with ZERO leading and great accuracy (if I can do my part). Right now, it's at about 300 rounds of cast loads since its last cleaning, and the bore is brilliantly shiny.

I'm also using a LEE .44-310 mold ($16.00!!!!) for my .404 right now, sizing the bullets down to .424". Accuracy is fine, but I expect a proper .404 design of about 375 grains to do even better.

I've said this before, but it bears repeating: If you shoot big rifles, and you do NOT cast your own bullets for it, you're missing out on some great entertainment, a huge cost saving, and a way to USE your big guns a whole lot without imposing very much wear on them at all.

(Full-power .416 Rigbys cost me less than $5.00 per 20, with my own cast bullets. 2000-fps/365-grain practice loads are well under $3.00 per 20. I've cast at least 2,000 bullets from that RCBS .416 mold to date.)

Regards from BruceB (aka Bren Mk1)

Call them and ask Fred. I have been pressuring them to do just that, and they are about ready to "cave in". It just takes people calling and demanding the ,423" bullets and the 404 brass. Hornady WILL make it, if we all call and ask.
