Here's some information:

http://www.hodgdon.com/data/rifle/405win.php

I'm using a wee bit more than the max Varget load (one extra grain) with 400 grain Woodleighs. I have extended the throat of the gun somewhat and am seating the bullet longer than that listed on the Hodgon load data, so the pressure is probably less than their data provides. I get 1945 fps or so with the load so I'm safe enough, according to the velocity Hodgdon gets, I reckon?

I also have a bunch of old 350 grain Barnes X's that'll feed (at least the first two) through my 1895 Winchester. They too show no pressure signs but I haven't checked the velocity yet. I'd assume that they are a little faster than the 400 grain loads.

Let me know your data with IMR4320 and the 360 grain North Forks when you finish. I've got a bunch of the powder and would like to use some, particularly with the fine North Fork bullets that Mike makes.

Hey Guys,

I am working up some loads for my .405 Win. & 360 gr. North Fork Bullet and found a can of IMR 4320. According to my powder chart it is slower than H4895 and faster than BL-C(2). I don't have H4895 but I do have some Varget, BL-C(2) and 4320 and since I have these powders I want to give them a try.

I've never read anything about the use of 4320 for the .405 so I'm a little in the dark. What I've read and been told about H4895, Varget and the BL-C(2) is conflicting. Some say that these powders are too slow and some say that they are perfect. I'll try them in my rifle and see what works.

Anyhow, does anyone have an idea of a starting load with the IMR 4320?

Thanks a bunch,

Smoker

Hey JudgeG,

I found some data on the IMR powders 3031 and 4895 - 4895 being the slowest. IMR 4320 is a little slower than either of these two. The data on the 3031 shows a beginning charge of 41.2 grs. with the 300 gr. bullet and on the 4895 shows a beginning charge of 51 gr. with the 300 gr. bullet.

Therefore, I believe that about 52 grs. of IMR 4320 should be a good starting load with the 360 gr. North Fork. Just in case I'm wrong, (that's happened once or twice) I wrote IMR an email and asked for a starting load. Hopefully, they will respond tomorrow.

I would be happy to share my data with you. It seems that nobody has been experimenting with various powders in the .405. IMR 4320 may turn out to be very useful.

Thanks for the info. on the Varget. Maybe with the 360 gr. bullet and my 28" barrel Varget will burn completely and turn the 360 into a real zoomie.

Good Shooting,

Smoker
