I am wanting a Ruger Alaskan in 416 pretty bad. I would shoot it a lot. I just like to shoot. Has anyone had one of these long enough to know how well the Houge Ovemoulded stock would hold up with repetative recoil? Seems that over time there would be better choices for stock material.

I have one. So far 100+ rounds and no problems, anywhere, stock or otherwise. I will have it this year as my guide rifle in AK ( I think this is the big bear guides dream rifle). I will pack it for 3 weeks straight after the Big Brownies. I will post if any problems. Maddog

I put 200 rounds thru mine for practice and troubleshooting, prior to taking it on my buff/ele hunt in Zim. It rode around in the Land Crusier racks, got handled a lot by everyone, dragged thru the thick jess in sweaty hands, and was fired 40 more times while there. No problems at all, and it was still shooting perfectly on the last shot 8/14.

I love it!

I have the .375 version. I don't care for the Houge stocks. fisrt thing I did was order a properly fit H-S Precision stock. This rifle with my reloads is increably accurate. I will be taking it to Kodiak on my Mnt Goat hunt on Sept 9. I was going to get the .416 but since I have a 458 Lott I figured a .375 would be a better fit to a two gun set up.

I also hate Houge stock on rifle. Thank God for camo and black duct tape.

Does the 416 Ruger come with a barrel band sling swivel? I was handling a 375 Ruger Alaskan at Cabela's the other day and was quite impressed - the sights seemed very functional.

Yes.
Not a very good pic but you can see it here,
stainless and skinny, a barrel band sling base from the factory:

Is the barrel band a newer option as it appears that Blank's 416 ruger Alaskan does not have the barrel band in the photos from his hunt report?

Good eye, Sevens. Mine does indeed have the forearm sling-swivel stud. Hasn't been a problem with carrying, or hitting your finger under recoil. It could be that the newest ones like Rip's picture are changed over, but mine was the very first one the wholesaler had received, back when I got it. It is so nice and short that it never hung up in the thick brush, and a barrel band mount would even let it ride 2 inches lower. Talk about handy!

Despite a stainless 416 Ruger being the farthest thing from a classic African rifle, I love barrel band sling swivels - I think they should be mandatory on big bores.

Now that the 416 Ruger has been out awhile, what is everyone's opinion on it staying around. Will it hold fast like the 416 Rigby or is it just passing through?

As I have mentioned in other threads, I am not a big fan of of the 77, but the Alaskan in 416 and Hawkeye in 358 interest me. The 416 definitely has utility.

Next time I visit Mountain View Sports I may leave with one. The short barrel will come in handy for use when driving a snow machine through the woods. Lou
