What do you think of the .35 Whelen loaded with 250g bullets at 2650fps for the smaller African stuff and the .416 Taylor for the largest game on a 2 rifle African safari?

I see nothing wrong with the idea. I have a Whelen and am thinking about building a 416 Taylor

I have never gotten that much speed out of a standard Whelen with 250's, the Ackley will do it.

Check out African hunter Magazine (don't know the web address) they have an article under rifles about the Whelen. Check it out.

That's my 2 cents

Other than the fact that if you lose your ammo your up the preverbal creek, I think the 35 Whelen is a fine caliber and so is the 416 Chatfield-Taylor.....

I'd prefer the 9.3x62 and the 416 Remington as an equal and a mite better, and ammo is available in Africa for both at the bigger shops, the good old airlines lose your luggage...Remember you have to take ammo in you clothes bag seperated from you guns...This happens on ocassions, but not often..

Sambubba,
I agree with Ray 100%. I took a .35 Whelen to Zim. When we arrived at the airport in Harare out comes the rifle case but no luggage ie. no ammo. Thankfully my second rifle was a .375H&H and ammo was plentiful.
My bags were flown up to the camp several days later so all was not lost. I took two Kudu, two Impala, and two Baboons with the .35WH but I had to pass up a 350 yard shot on an exceptional Kudu in an open field.
Next trip my .338WM is going in place of my .35WH.

So then ????? Everyone.

What is the most popular .416 in a standard action in Africa. Doesn't A-square make ammo for the 416 Taylor? I mean something you can get ammo for? How about the .338WM for ammo availability?

Just some pre-planning?(dreaming) of the first trip to Africa.

Regards

BD

416 Remington, and 338 Win is available in Africa, as is the 375 in the larger stores....A-Square is defunct.
There is no standard action 416 ammo available in Africa....

An African company is producing ammo and guns for the 416 on a short 404 case and its a nice round but ammo is not widely available and never will be...

the far reaches of the would are no place for wildcat rounds or anything but the most popular calibers such as the 30-06, 7x57, 375 H&H, 303 British, 458 Win....The larger stores in these areas have a pretty good selection of ammo and go beyond the above..
