I promised folks on this forum I would get drawings of the new Holland cartridges, and I am pleased to report that I have been able to do so -- courtesy of Mr. Russell Wilkin at Holland.

Please note that these sketches are not minimum chamber drawings nor maximum cartridge drawings, they were used for a 'smith at Holland to make brass dummies to test actions. They will give you a good idea of the cartridge "confirmation". [Wink]

The article is on the African Hunter website, and the URL is http://african-hunter.com/new_h&h_cartridges.htm

Is the 465 bullet at .468" diameter the same as 470 nitro bullets. I wish I could afford a new rigby in this caliber. Maybe when I win the Lotto.

I believe the nominal bullet diameter specification for the .470 Nitro is .474". Some sources show .475". (Woodleigh makes their bullets at .474; I've seen other bullet makes at .475")

If I remember correctly, the original 500/465 Nitro Express (H&H) used .468" bullets.

The two rounds are very similar but not the same.

Jim,

First, thanks for the site to get the case specs.

Looking at the case, the neck seems to be quite long. .6800 as compared to .300 for the 375. This seems to take up quite a bit of case that could be used for more powder. There must be a good reason. Do you know why?

The case does not have the taper the 375 has, must be a reason for this also.

Can the case be fireformed from 375 brass? Do you think using a fireform load and some cheap 411 slugs will work?

I know, many questions here, but I'm very interested in this round.

Thanks for your help,
Roger QSL

Roger,

The intention was to run the cartridge at low pressure. I presume that consideration along with feeding and extraction drove the choice of the values for the case design parameters. I will visit Russell Wilkin this week, so I will ask.

I further presume you could make brass the same way A-Square did for their .400 Pondoro: fireform .375 H&H brass using pistol bullets.

I am interested as well, and am assembling components to build a rifle. I would be pleased to order an H&H rifle, but I haven't won any lotteries recently. [Wink]
