What's wrong with CZ quality? I was under the impression that CZ > Winchester in terms of quality control. CZ's double squared bridge > Winchester's round thingy on top IMO. For under $1,500 all I would change is the trigger and stock.

Thats a tough question and manily personal choice, they all work. If money is an issue, 550 CZ. The hump back stock can be lived with, CZ 3 position safety (not mdl 70)is easy to install and cheap. Bedding is easy to do and cheap if you have to send it out. The CZ trigger can be worked on and slicked up. The model 70 is nice also, its just money. The ruger does nothing for me for some reason, but its still a good gun.

Ruger 77 in 416 Rigby or 375, then the Winchester, then the CZ. Or... get a Daly Mauser action and have a smith put together exactly what you want. Mine is in 458 Win. with a DOuglas barrel, proper barrel mounted sling, Boyds JRS laminate stock. It shoots really well and you would not believe how cheap you can have this done.

Model 70 would be my pick and is my pick. Several reasons, I like it, I can afford it and I don't like CZ due to it's looks, feel and quality. The Ruger is a good one, but the PH's I have hunted with all voted for the M70 over anything else. Good enough for me. Bottomline is - buy what you like. The cost of the trip is far more than that gun. buy the best gun you can.

Just out of curiosity, let's say you had to choose between a new m70 safari express, Ruger m77 RSM, or CZ-550. Which would you choose and why? You can not rip it apart and add a new barrel and bottem metal, etc., but let us say some gunsmithing is allowed, but keep the total to under $1500 including the cost of the rifle. Main query is plains game with a bit of dangerous game, this may influence caliber choice. These are the three choices I'm looking at for my rifle and I want to see what other people would do in my shoes. Sevens

I would break the rules... But if I could not get away with that, I would get the Ruger RSM and send my thumb out to physical therapy to learn how to use the safety.

I'd get the CZ... Add a new trigger and perfect feeding + crossbolts. Should be good enough as a DGR IMO..

I would get the Ruger in cal. 458 Lott it is a great killer. Refinish the stock your self with oil and you have a great clasic looking rifle. Cheers, Andr

Sevens, For me, i would have to restock just about all of them, so add 500 for a smith to do it. I think ANYONE that can handle a knife and fork can learn to bed properly, so I'll bend the rules and say I can swap the stock, and we'll call that 300 I will also rule out the 375 I think, for the spirit of your question, that the CZ is the low end for a 416 rigby, that requires, for me, a model 70 safety and restocking. That is, cz, 650, safety, 250, stock 300, equals 1200.. i guess there is enough money in the 1500 to cover a smith to do the work. the model 70 is "only" available in 416 rem and 458 win... 950$, restock, 300, down... $1250 ruger, 1250 bucks, restock (what a SHAME) 300, 1550... jeffe

I would take the cz over the m70...despite what others on this site will tell you the m70 is not the be all and end all... and of the m70's I have handled there quality IMHO is not on a par with cz's...same goes for remington rifles. So for me it would be; cz Ruger M70.
