Has anyone used Warne Q/D's on big bores, specifically 416 Rigby or similar calibers? Practical experience would be appreciated. Warne is a likely option in SA as they trade around $90 - $105, vs german Q/D's for about $ 1000.

Machiel, I've had a set on my Ruger 416 Rigby and they have withstood about 350 shots of hunting loads without any problem. Take them off and they return to the sighted point of aim within about 1 inch at 50 yards. Very strong but a real pain IMO to install and get everything lined up. There are a lot of other choice between these in cost. The Talley is a nice steel ring that is designed the same as the aluminum Warne (split vertical). The Talley cost about $150. I have used the Warne, but not for big rifles. I also have the Talley and I think you get what you pay for in terms of quality. Then there is Leupold (also steel), in between price (between Warne and Talley) and probably the standard. I prefer steel over aluminum, except where weight is a concern. Edit: I was corrected, the Warne are steel also. Bad memory. Dont know nothin about no $1000 rings!

For your education. Probably the most comprehensive range and best made sighting components in the world. http://www.recknagel.de/ (also sold by NECG).

The question was about Warne, but I like to add another 2c on rings. I just setup a ultralight slug shotgun with Weaver Grand Slam QD rings. A heavy recoil gun. Rings cost all of $30! Very easy to install. Solid steel construction. So far, I would believe these are as good as ANY system for ANY price. No pretentious BS, just simple solid steel. Simple install and SIMPLE rugged construction. I am very optimistic about these rings. The finish is a dull blue, not highly polished, but ok. Some like that non-reflective look. I will grant you there maybe quicker detaching systems, and still I dont no nothin about no $1000 rings. FWIW, Waever Grand Slam QR look like a rock solid option for they guy who just wants to mount a scope with removal for open sites as a backup - or switch to a 0x DOT scope.

I have a set on my Ruger RSM in 416 Rigby. They work fine for me. I didn't experience any difficulty getting them lined up and installed. I don't think mine are made of aluminum. I felt the corners of the levers were rather sharp and could cut your hand when working the bolt fast, so I rounded off the sharp corners with a file and touched them up with cold blue. It worked for me, and cold blue doesn't work on aluminum. Tom Z NRA Life Member

Maybe I got my facts mixed up on the Aluminum. I need to check that,.. Well if they took the blue that would be steel. No question. Oh Yea, I checked their website. Says steel. Sorry about that. Maybe I can edit my comments above and not screw up the thread to much. They have worked out for me, I just have not used them on my larger guns. I trust what others are saying. In addition the Talley, Leupold and Weaver Grand Slam should work also.

Warnes are made of powdered metal... sintered steel in fact, with a black powdercoat finish. Before you get worried about the "powdered" part of a powdered metal component, after the sintering process (heat and pressure) the resulting material is essentially equal in strength to the original parent material. I have a set on my CZ in 375H&H and they have stood up to over 500 rounds without issue. In my experience they return to zero within ~1" or so at 100 yds. I also have a set on a 416Rigby, but haven't had a chance to put too many rounds through it. Based on my results with the 375 I have no reason to suspect they won't hold up.

I have them on a .404 with 250 rounds and no problems. You should be fine. Raff

Hi Machiel, I bought a set of Wayne QD's for a 458wm I'm building. I was not impressed with the quality. I spent 4.5hrs hand lapping the bores to get them close to being round. If I had not done that, the scope barrel would have been damaged with the off setting ring halfs. They were that bad. There are made of quality steel and that's all I can say good about them. Would I buy another set? NOT in my life time. T_Bone

I have been using the Warne QD rings almost exclusively on all of my rifled shotgun setups for close to a decade....They work perfectly and I have not had a single issue with them despite shooting even the heavist 12ga loads. JC

i dont know if warne makes more than one kind of ring but the ones that split vertically with one screw on top wouldnt keep the scope from slipping on my 416 rem. got them so tight it swaged the scope. plain old $25 weavers never had problem and always come back to zero, may be ugly but i use my guns, not collector items If your gonna be dumb, you gotta be tuff.

Anukpuk - Warne must have changed their rings at some point in time. Mine are about three years old are vertically split, but have two screws on the top of each ring. Never saw a set with only one screw on the top. Tom Z NRA Life Member
