Gentlemen Like many of you on this forum , I got bidden by the "big bore bug" At present my "biggest one" is a 375HH CZ550. I would like to go alittle further up the "big bore trail". A 400 maybe, It is important to me that the recoil is managable, because I like to shoot big bores..alot!!!...So the extreme cannons are nothing for me... I have tried the 404 jeffrey and I found it within my "limits" For the moment I am considering something like 404, 416 Rem, 416 Rigby, 400HH I beleive the performance of these 400s are almost equal???. Should I rechamber my CZ or maybe get a new one in a 400 caliber. Please give me some inputs... My buddy has a Ruger#1 416Rem, for sale, but I am not sure of a single shot, as I have no experience with single shot rifles. Looking forward to hear from you all.... //VOYAGER

Hej landsmand I think that a 400 caliber is a wrong supliment for your .375 H&H. A nice two rifle battery would be your .375 H&H and a 45 cal like the 458 Lott. If the rifle is build right then recoil should not be a problem. JMO Once you get use to the recoil of your .375 H&H the the 458 Lott will not deliver a recoil that you can not learn to master if you want to ! Cheers, Andr

Jefeosso Well I know what you mean ! That is why my two rifle battery is a .375 H&H and a .500 Jeffery I know you like the .500 Jeffery . But I still think that a 458 lott is a nice caliber to go with the 375 H&H JMO. Another two rifle battery that I like is 8X68s and 416 Rigby. Voyager you wrote in another thread that you planed to use your .375 H&H mag. on Buff. If you get a bigger gun will you then still take your 375 to Africa or will you go with a different combination ? Cheers, Andr

Voyager, That is a most sensible battery for Africa. You get two rifles of different caliber (RSA won't allow you to bring in two of the same chambering) and either one can do everything and be there as a spare to back up the other. Very sensible. I chose the .375 H&H and .416 Rigby first time around. Next time I would chose the .375 Weatherby (or H&H) and the.404 Jeffery, for the same kind of flexibility and redundancy in two rifles with the same action and scopes for further redundancy. My pick for you would be a CZ action rebarreled to .404 Jeffery to be a mate to your .375 H&H. That action will easily hold 5 down and one up of either cartridge. A .404 Jeffery on a CZ 550 Magnum is on my wish list. Of course, if you have the hoity-toities for H&H, go with the .400 H&H.

I agree, if you want a big bore, go with the 458 Lott. As my byline says, you can load it down to 40 cal levels, but the 40's can't be loaded to 45 cal levels. That isn't to say the 40 cals aren't excellenct hunting rounds, as surely I'd take a 416 over a 375 any time, and for any species. That said, when looking for something bigger than a 375, I'd go with a 45. 40's are really just a heavy medium bore, the 45 and larger are true big bores.

If you are only going to own a pair of big bores well the .375 H&H and the .458 Lott truly are the most versatile and practical pair to punt for due to ease of brass & Bullets....however the .416 Rigby is a wonderful round and like many gun nuts you will just need to buy them all to avoid a dilemma
