The .470 Nitro Express, introduced around 1907 is attributed to Joseph Lang and is another of the standard big game calibres of the British gun trade that was adopted by a large number of rifle makers. It was developed as a substitute for the .450 which was banned in India and the Sudan for a number of years. It was popular with the elephant hunters of the day and still enjoys a great reputation.

Hi Cliff, and welcome to the forums

"all" of the big ne's have 5000 ft/lb os me, or so.. due to the grandfather of them all, the 450 NE, was a 500 at 2150... the laws in india and the sudan changed, outlawing all .458 bore.. which gave rise to all the others, except the 500 and 577, (bracketing from 450/400 to just short of the 500ne.

the recoil is tolerable.. it's not wickedly fast, and if the gun weighs right, it's not horrible. I would imagine that today we have vastly different perceptions of horrible though. To me, a 12 ga in a 6.5# doesn't HAVE any recoil, and a round of skeet with it, it might as well be a 22 shotshell. Not runningoff at the mouth, just different perceptions.

IMNSHO, the 470 is the definition of the african double rifle, and all the others are close, up and down the scale, untill you hit the 577.

the 458 winmag was built to match THIS load (not the 450ne #2 as some have said) and to date, really has never matched it. most of the time, a 500 or 510 winmag, factory, stumbles out of the barrel at 1900-2000fps...

The 458 lott meets and beats this ME and SD

congrats, you started on a finecaliber in a double. BTW, loaded ammo runs about $10 each for this, from any factory source.

The .458WM was designed to duplicate .470NE ballistics.

The .470NE is a dangerous game cartridge par excellence
, designed for killing elephants, Cape buffalo, rhino, hippo, lion, plus just about anything else within within its trajectory limits.

Although I shoot the 470 well and it is my choice of a double rifle caliber and I own a Searcy PH model..I think the word "grusome" pretty much describes its recoil with a 500 gr. bullet at 2245 FPS, which is what my gun chronograped at Searcys with 108 grs. of IMR-4831, and it does have a snug barrel BTW....A nicer and viable load is 85 grs. of RL-15 for 2020 FPS with same bullet and same POI, recoils about like a overloaded 416 Rigby! , but when I go to Africa I will use the faster load, just because..Thats about the only answer I can come up with.
