Stopped in at the FNAWS show today in Salt Lake City. Saw a few friends and was seeing what I could see. Stopped by the Remington Booth and they had a 798 in .375H&H. I don't know if anyone has written about these but here is my .02 Wood was a Laminated Stock, and the Action and Barrel were stainless that was bead blasted. Saying that the action was crappy was being nice. Smoothness is not a selling point of Zastava actions I guess. The Claw extractor seemed a little thin in the metal department, and the bolt face looked like a 4 year old used hand tools to try to make it smooth. Machining marks were all over the front of the bolt face. Gun was HEAVY and did not handle well. And the feed ramp had many machining marks also. MSRP on the rifle was over $1,000!!!!! So even subtract 10% you are still looking at a $900 piece of crap. I don't know how Remington is going to sell these, but maybe they will??? That was all I can think of now about the rifle, but I am probably going to check out a few things tomorrow and can follow up if you guys have questions. Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. they were pretty nice actions/rifles when Daly had them, remington is getting the reputation as a company that turns everything they touch into shite. They just cannot figure out a way to make guns here any cheaper than they are in the carolinas, and they still have a tremendous debt structure to service. Savage is just killing them on the quality and lower $$$ end of the business, and Ruger is pounding them even harder on the mid-priced segment...along with CZ. Gaudy is NOT! in in 2007, they have just made all the wrong moves the past ten years. JMHO, Rich DRSS

My former hunting partner had a Remington 700 with a synthetic stock and stainless barrel and action in 375 and I thought it was a really nice gun. Watched his 14 year old daughter drop a whitetail with it, and she said it only pushed a little more than her 270 Win.. I thought it was nioce looking, but I don't like Remingtons as a rule, much prefer Ruger 77's. Even the rocks don't last forever.

I truly look to Remington's announcement of financial difficulties shortly as the signs are bulging into the product lines and their communications. They need to be taken over by a few folks that have a love of reasonable quality and serving the customer. Their M-700 in the CDL model is now near the $1,000 mark and is out of line with the competition. I suppose some will be blaming the unions for this as well. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Vapodog, that dog ain't gonna hunt...people in the southeast quarter of the country do not (as a rule) believe in unions...just another yankee invention to get some $$$ out of their paycheck. I keep waiting to hear that they are moving production to Mexico...heck it works for all of the Big Three pickup truck manufacturers! regards, Rich DRSS

Rich, It wasn't intended to be a hunting dog at all! All I said is that should Remington make an announce of financial distress that some will blame the unions! I'm neither pro nor anti-union.....but I can say this.....if quality goes to hell it's the result of bullshit management....not unions! If a company fails it's a result of bullshit management and not unions.....If a company has a Union it is most likely the result of bullshit management! I've lived on both sides of the tracks /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." A company gets the Union they deserve........Since the primary reason to vote in a union is to protect the work force from greed , incompetance , and an un careing attitude... Unfortunately many union members abuse the situations....It is like [ people get the government they deserve ]........ Compare the report on the 798 with RIP,s report on the 375 Ruger.........98 action or not it would be a no brainer which I will choose......Its odd that winchester had a hard time makeing a half decient 375 stainless also ,, some were , not bad ,and some were unuseable ????? .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Dear SierraBravo 45: Thank you for your assessment of the new 798 Remington. Cabelas near my locale doesn't have one yet, so your opinion is helping me form mine as to using their actions for a couple of rifle building projects. As to Remington's problems, here was my experience. Ignorantly, in the summer of 1993 I traded in my 700 ADL (1968 manufacture) in 243 Winchester for a brand new Remington 700 Varmint rifle. I do not remember the exact model designation, but it was a heavy barrel 26" in 22-250. My old 700 shot five shot groups into groups ranging from 0.6 inches to occassionally just over 1". The new 700 rarely placed five shots into 2.25", usually much larger groups. These were all handloads, through a bedded rifle. My old 700 was never bedded, trued, etc. I bought it used in 1977 for $160.00. When I traded it, I was told that it was off the used rack in 20 minutes. Based on your observations I will not use the new Remington 798 as a donor action. Sincerely, Chris Bemis
