Has anyone on the forums done it? What was your experiences like and where did you get the data?

Not in a Lott, but lots of experience with cast in a .458WM.

Get a mold for the RCBS 500gr RNFPGC bullet. This bullet has a short nose and LOOONNGGG bearing surface. It has 5 or 6 lube grooves.

This bullet has been, by far, the most accurate in my .458 regardless of powder or charge.

Been there, tried that, NOT worth the trouble. Just go buy the Remmy 405gr SP., they are cheap, easyy to get, and shoot great. If you do not push them over 2100fps, they will work just fine on deer and big hogs.

Where I live, shipping bullets often costs more than the slugs do so it's inevitable that I'm going to melt down some of the fishing weights and lead lines around here and put them to some legitimate use

I've launched at least 2000 360 grain flat nosed plain based lead slugs out of my .458 Lott over 16-22 grains of Universal Clays. UC is a fairly bulky powder and I've not had any trouble with squibs due to varying charge locations in the case. Some of the new Cowboy action powders might even be better. 16 grains yeilds about 1300fps and 22 pushes 1500. Pay close attention to bullet fit and find the sweet spot. I used this load for rapid fire plinking practice at steel plates and such.

Another load I found that works well for me is RCBS's 405 grainer, the little brother to Ranger Bob's 500gr. This is gaschecked and, again with the proper size for the bore and at least a Lyman #2 hard alloy, 68grains of H4895 throws it at 2100fps, treading right on the heels of the vaunted .404. I've burned up about 500 of these loads for a little more rock and roll practice.

I don't recall the mold number, but I've cast a 500 gr lyman that I load over 80 gr of Varget for 2150 fps from my 22" lott. I worked up the loads based on experience from my previous lott.

Great practice load. I've worked up to 84 gr for 2250 fps, but the 80 gr / 2150 fps seems to shoot best.

Have not tried the cast bullets in my Lott, but as Hog Killer says, the Rem. 405 bulk bullets do work very nicely and economical as well as available. Seem to hold under an inch at 100 and the velocity is around 2200 fps for them in my Ruger Magnum Deluxe w/ 23" barrel. You can get more velocity if desired, but believe the bullet would not stand up due to thin wall, 45/70 heritage.
