Does anyone know of a manufacturer that *might* produce a Magnum Mauser action that is literally bench rest accurate, has at least a .750" bolt, .416 Rigby head, perferably uses a Remington trigger (or at least a LIGHT trigger, no higher pull than 8 oz.) and a magazine length of at least 3.85" (preferred 3.95")??? Any info would be appreciated. I'm basically looking for at least a 1/2 MOA action, if not 1/4 MOA (even better). The Mauser action was never designed with the concept of "Benchrest accuracy" in mind. The "tighter" you build the specifications chasing accuracy, the less reliable the action will be. You can make a "Benchrest Accurate" 416 Rigby on a larger Surgeon brand action, likewise a Barnard action or an RPA "Quadlock". For a bazillion bucks you could get an action made by CNC altered to have a much longer threaded section where the barrel screws into the action. It would look a bit "off", but it would help a lot with accuracy. A high quality barrel will help at least as much as more threads. Anyway, you want two attributes that are somewhat mutually exclusive. Good luck tilting at windmills. LD

The "action" is only part of the equation when it comes to accuracey. Also need a good barrel, proper chambering, proper bedding and someone to put all the the different "parts" together, so it is accurate (plus some other mojo that I probably don't even know about). I have a custom 300H&H built on a military mauser action (Chilean) that will put three 200 grain Nosler Partitions in the same hole at 100 yards. It didn't start out as a "match grade action" but it doesn't know it isn't one. I also have a 416 Rigby built on a Granite Mountain action and it looks like it is also going to be a shooter....still breaking it in, but I can already tell it knows what to do.

In my opinion, the barrel/chamber are the most important components to accuracy, next making sure the action and bolt are trued to the barrel. Lock time is important, and action stiffness, but less so than the first two factors. I apologize for being so negative earlier. I woke up today and thought about what you want to do, and it really is not out of the realm of the do-able. CRF Winchester actions were the base of target rifles at the National Matches for decades. I will try and dig up the names of some gunsmiths who advertise that theywill take a Mauser, CZ or Winchester CRF, and "blueprint" and tighten up the "allowances" so that the rifle still works reliably, but does so much more accurately. That, and a Krieger/Bartlein or Broughton barrel put together by one of those gunsmiths will not get you into the benchrest league, but will make the gun very accurate. I think I saw a link to one down on the gunsmithing page in the CZ thread that is blooming right now. I do apologize for shooting my mouth off earlier. That was rude of me. Good luck with your endeavor. When I find some links I will post them here or PM you. Good luck on your quest, lawndart

I use sand bags and a 4X4" for all my rifles When sighing in. The 4X4 is up front with a sand bag.
