This ole tang safty 458 is capable of better group than I can shoot 2 shots at 100yds one hole/ 3 shots and I start to feel the recoil 1.5 inch to 2 inch/ I have a 2x7 lepold scope on this one. as a disabled vet I cannot walk far and my adult sons often go with me/ by golly when I do my part I can drop those 225 meter chickens/ and miss is easy for my spotter. If it shoots well, just get some Wipe-Out and it will clean up easily. No elbow grease required. The Passive-aggressive foam bore cleaner, not to be confused with the lesser foams, ask for name brand: Wipe-Out

You did not mention how well the rifle shoots.

We have found that some barrels, regardless of how smooth they look, seems to foul a lot more than others that look the same.

What I suggest is you start off by cleaning the barrel thoroughly, using J-B Compound, as I have found this works for calibers that are not so fast.

If this fails, my only suggestion is to replace the barrel if you are not happy with its accuracy.

Help I have a Ruger 77 458win mag. I have used Win 510 sp factory loads/ Reloads Barnes 400 gr/ some store bought mister 500 gr lead/ 40+ grs of Auccurate 5744 , Reloader 7 for Jacketed loads. Bore is .458 and looks smooth with 10 power loupe. But it just gets smeared with copper / and lead the last 8 inches of the bore/ Does any one crome bores any more? or should I have the barrel replaced. or just let this one set in the gun rack? reloader since 1959

My .416 Rem. fouled badly when I got it (especially with Barnes X-bullets), so I used the NECO fire-lapping kit and had excellent results. Average group size was also cut about in half. The NECO system has worked well for me with several rifles. I use only jacketed bullets in the process, although NECO recommends it for either cast or jacketed bullets. I know a lot of people don't like fire-lapping, but if you are going to scrap the barrel you have nothing to loose by trying it.

You might also try the Barnes Triple-shock bullets. I have used them in the .270 Win. and .338 Win. Copper fouling is not eliminated, but it is greatly reduced.

I also have an older tang safety 458 Win Mag and I love the mine. I hate the mickeymouse rear sight on it but can get 1-2" at 50 yds offhand. I've put around 250 rds through it and didn't notice any more fouling than normal. As suggested by RIP, use Wipeout and it should get rid of the fouling in good order. If it is a good shooter, just shoot more full power jacketed loads in it to smooth out the barrel. Since you mention using Barnes bullets, I suggest you see if it still fouls as badly by not using Barnes bullets. Just trying to eliminate variables.
