CZ Iron sights
How good are the factory iron sights on the CZ safaris? Adequate, good, great?
Thanks;
Mike Allred

My main beef with them is that *my load* punches holes about 5-6 inch low at 50 yards. (400 grs Noslers at a trifle over 2400 fps). I need to flip up the "300 yards" sight, to get to a 50 yard zero. I can imagine that in low light (shadow) conditions and with a dark target (buffalo!) the front sight will be hard to discern. Haven't tried them on anything else than paper targets and various things in my basement during dry firing drills, but sometimes I just can't find the front bead. More field-experienced people would have to come up with a suggestion for a suitable replacement.

I have fired three CZ 550's with their iron sights -- all in .416 Rigby -- and every one of them was spot on (as the British say) with factory ammo. they are tough and visible. Probably the best factory sights out there.

i like them alot... not perfect, but darn good...

with a little work, the necg front sights insert in them..

if you are shooting low, get a short front sight.

take yours out (watch out, the spring and plunger may fly) and look at the number on it.. chances are, it's AROUND a 6 or 7.. call cz and order a 3

All mine are "spot on" as well. On two (416 Rigby and 458 Lott) I had the NECG front site put on and works well. My 375 has the factory CZ set up and shoot as well as I can with open sites....

Everyones eyesight is different so they are on for some and off for other and some don't have a clue one way or the other....

They are good strong sights, you may have to file them in or change the front sight to make them come to zero, but thats easy enough if you know how...If not then here you go:

To move bullet impact to the left, move the rear sight to the left or the front sight to the right

to move the bullet impact to the right, move the rear sight to the right or the front sight to the left..

to elevate bullet impact you must elevate rear sight or lower front sight

To lower the bullet impact you must lower the rear sight or elevate the front sight..

One elevates the front sight by replaceing it with a higher sight and visa versa, unless the front sight is high enough and/or can be filed down, such as with a partridge sight....

I thought this might be helpfull to some, cut it out and take it to the range..I carry one in my wallet so I don't get confused in my old age..

to paraphrase what ray side...

to make bullet impact move...

rear sight
move it the direction you want the bullet to go (up-up, down, down)

front sight,
move it the opposite... bullet UP, sight down.

i just glanced thru but didn't notice if this were mentioned: the cz's are adjustable for elevation. the front blade is removeable by depressing a plunger. front sights are available in something like 10 different heights in .030" (i believe) increments. they're #'d on the bottom. last time i checked they were on the order of $9 each. not exactly a show stopping price and available w/ just a phone call to cz-usa's customer service.

There is a formula in the Brownells catalog that you can use to figure the change in the height of the front sight, to get the amount of up or down in the bullet impact point. I am not at home so I do not have that info with me, but I will try to find it.
It takes into consideration the distance between the front and rear sights.

the sights are replacable for elevation, not adjustable.

they are like 5 mm increments, .013ish, iirc.

you don't really need a formula; it's just similar triangles. if you need to change bullet elevation by say 5" at 100 yds, and your sights are 20" apart and you want the change in hieght of the front (or rear, distance will be the same) you'd get z/20" = 5/(100x3x12)" or z=100/3600 which is roughly .028".

my only gripe abt the cz irons is the front bead is too small. esp for a 416 which is what i got now. did have an old zkk in 375 (same sights). where else can you get a rear sight boss machined as part of the barrel, 3 leaf express, and a banded front w/ replaceable bead for elevation adjustment in a rifle selling for $7-800 or whatever they actually go for now.

Will,
like i said, a little work, the necg front sight can be mad to fit... i did this for my son's light 458 win... then you can have a larger sight!!

ok, adjustable was probably a poor choice of words but what i meant was you can "adjust" the POI w/o resorting to files. the front signt on my 338mag i made from solid stock and the rear is a filed in express. you can't "adjust" it by simply replacing a cheap part.

i've got an NECG front on my whelen; will have to look into that as i can barely see CZ's front sights. i did modify one once making a hippo ivory bead but didn't have much luck keeping it on. is just not enough on the cz blade to attach to.

I must have a 3/32 ivory bead with shallow v sights...The pop up nite sight is too course and the other sight is too small...

Nothing works like a ghost peep and a NECG square gold faced partridge sight that can be filed to elevation, and that keeps the peep down close to the rear action ring....I buy the .007 high sight and file it ot zero with the peem resting on the rear ring...

Hmm, did that, mine has a 14 on the bottom! Who slipped THAT in on a Monday morning?

Ray, have patience, I'm a nitwit with this stuff... does that set up interfere with QD scope mounts? I'm just discovering the ghost ring / post sights on my "new" Lee Enfield, and I'm beginning to develop a liking for it. Might try that on my .416 Rigby, do you have a link to a catalogue somewhere, or a dummy explanation on how to recognize when I see it, what you described?

Thanks.

Ray

Who's ghost peep site would you recommend, and what is NECG short for? Please be a bit more expansive, and write the above for a normal person to understand.

I've loved peep sites since the ones I Used on M1A's.

Thanks

Two things come to mind, Rays wrong on one count above you replace the front sight with a lower sight to raise the point of impact, dunderhead....

Frans,
If you use a Brockmon pop up ghost sight on talley bases all problems are solved, several other scope bases have simular features..Talley also makes a slide on ghost peep..I have several of these...

I also have a number of just plain iron sighted big bores with Peeps and/or shallow V sights,
I love iron sights...

New England Gun Company. IIRC Midway carries them, Brownells may have them also.

Both of my ZKK 602s shot quite well. I could easily cover three offhand 100m shots with palm of my hand. My older companions could not see the front blade and consequently did worse. They included spare trigger, screwdriver, but no larger front blade, a pitty. Frowner
