Folks,

Rusty's photos of his double rifle shoot a while back intrigued me. They got me thinking the past few weeks about how to arrange a DGR target shoot at my local gun club.

I was wondering if any of you have done something like this? If so what sort of rules and rifle/caliber categories did you have? How was the range set up? How would you score the targets? What kind of targets did you use? Is there already an established set of rules for such a shoot?

What I was thinking was to have a charging buff target (with stiffener frame) on a moving cable (as appeared to be used in Rusty's shoot). The cable would be set to move at a specified speed (say 6.5 meters per second/14.5 mph), from ~75 meters to ~25 meters from the shooter. [The target would likely have to move at an angle relative to the shooter to prevent damage to the cabling mechanism.]

Scoring would be relative to the anatomy of the target as presented to the shooter (brain = X ring, etc...)

Any other ideas/thoughts? If we can come up with some standard rules (if they don't already exist), perhaps we can do some sort of postal shoot.

Steve the buff targets I got from RSA have two seperate scoring areas. One lower chest and the other between the eyes. There are instruction on the target for shooting it at various ranges.

Could you tell me who the printer/supplier was for the targets that you used? Can you also share some of the details regarding your shoot (rules, setup, etc...) or did you use the rules on the targets.

It looked to me from you photos that you had the targets setup to move on a cable. If that's true, about how fast were they traveling?

Brent: I'm not sure if a tire would work for what I was thinking. I think that it would work well simulate braodside shots on running game, but don't think that it work to emulate charging game. I've been thinking that if one had enough slack in a cable system that could be used to cause the target to have 'random' vertical motion.

Try www.biggamerifleclub.com. Double Rifles, English bolts, Bore Guns etc. They have shoots sponsored by H&H,Purdy etc. More knowledge on Doubles than any other group I know and very friendly and willing to share. Buying the beer is also a big help.

The first shoot I attended must have had $500,000 worth of firearms. All being used. Including the First .600NE made by Jeffery and a Westly Richards 8 Bore Rifle made for the Paris Exhibition in 1900. Very cool.

I'm from Seattle, if you get this thing off of the ground and I'm still around I expect an invite.

It looked quite interesting and I vaguely recall surfing onto the BGRCA site a couple of years ago.

I've quickly looked over the rules and I think that it is probably what I'll go with. I plan on contacting someone within BGRCA to get more details. After that I'll see about pitching the idea to my gun club. Never done anything like this so, we'll see how it goes.

If I do get this off the ground, I'll be sure to get you an invite, as well as anyone else on this esteemed board.

I had a post on here a while back with a link to some video of a guy shooting at a moving buff target with a 4 bore. The shoot is held every year in Sept. in N.Y. at the Orvis shooting grounds. Looks like lots of fun esp. with the really big guns. You might see if Orvis or the folks at Doubleguns could give you a layout of their setup.

How's this for a scenario? Use baloons at 3 different ranges... at 50yards put out 3 of different colors that are about 12" in diameter---spaced about 3 yards apart, one at 25yards about 8" in diameter and one at 10 yards is 4" in diameter. Tie them on strings so they are free to move about in the air.

The shooter and his coach (range officer)are back about 150 yards and with the rifle unloaded, run/jog/trot 100 yards and then walk bent over for the last 50 yards. At this point the shooter and his coach step up to the line and stand behind a screen so he can't see the baloons. The shooter loads his rifle and is given a short period of time to catch his/her breath ... maybe 10 to 15 seconds while the range officer peeks around the screen and motions for the shooter to step out...as the shooter clears the screen. the range officer says "shoot the red (or whichever color he selects) one". Time starts...the shooter must hit the baloon selected at 50 yards and then break the 25 yard and 10 yard baloon. Time stops when the closest baloon is broken.

Any rifle (no semi-automatics or pumps), any sights....minimum power level is 4000 ftlbs at the muzzle.

Oh yea! One other thing...after the first shot at the 50 yard baloon the range officer should say/yell "shoot again, he's coming!" and fire a blank pistol several times down-range. Realistic enough for you?
