Does a standard reamer for a 45/70 cut any throat or freebore? The reamer I have doesn't appear to have a throat, but it was not advertised as being non-standard.

I have a Ruger No1 45-70 that seems to have a short chamber, with no throat. I can't seat the 400 gr speers out to crimp in the second crimping grouve! The short chamber without a long throat further limits the powder capacity, which is already too small in the 45-70, especially in the very strong Ruger No1! You can most likely throat the chamber deeper with a 458 Win Mag reamer, stopping it when the throat is deep as you want it! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Contact the reamer manufacturer and ask them; they would be your most reliable source of information. George

I realize I can buy or rent a throating reamer, but I did not think I would have to do this when I bought this chambering reamer. I guess my question really should have been, does a standard SAAMI 45/70 (that might be used on a Marlin or Sharps)chambering reamer include a throat portion. I couldn't get into the design section of Clymer's website and I can't find a print anywhere, so I thought I would ask here. I got this reamer on the secondary market, so am not sure I'll have much luck with the seller.
