.458 bullets for practice? Login/Join

Since Hornady discontinued the 500 grain interlock, what are you fellows using for a cheap good shooting practice bullet? I'm down to my last 100 Interlocks and 200 Interbonds. I think I have 50 Kodiak bullets left and then I'm into my Woodleigh and Hornady DGX. The inexpensive Hornadys were great for practice. I have a .458 Winchester Model 70 and .458 Lott Ruger Magnum to kept fed. Practice load for the Winchester is 71.5 grains of H335 and it really is accurate with the Interlocks and for a bit more velocity I use AA2230. IMR 4320 for the Lott. Both Rifles and cartridges are pure dee shooters!

I've been running 300gr casts through my Lott over IMR 3031 for cheap practice loads.

If you really want cheap bullets you have to cast, or find someone else to do it for you. Shooting will practically feel free once you take that leap.

In the process of moving give me some time and I can send you some 400 gr LBT LFN sized .4605 I have used for years in my Ruger 458 to try. They work great out to 150 yards.

My thank's to all of you that responded. I am already casting bullets for my Sharps rifles. (45's and 50's) so I can use some of the .45 designs in the Winchester and Lott. I was after a replacement for the Hornady Interlocks. It begins to look like there is not an inexpensive replacement for them. Woodleigh and Hornady DG series bullets are very good just not inexpensive. I may have to shoot my 375 H&H more as I have a boatload of Hornady Interlocks on hand in that caliber. I do wish Hornady would bring them back as they did about 10-12 years ago when they were discontinued and production was resumed. Maybe too much to ask.

I don't know if Remington 405's or Speer 400's are still made but they are nice bullets for 45's.

I tend to develop my reloads for a specific bullet (or in the case of my 458WM bullets). And then practice with those reloads I'm going to hunt
- i.e. "practice the way your going to play!"

That said, Do to the high cost of 450 Swift-As and 450 Barnes Solids,
I worked up my initial reloads with the 405 Remintons.

Looking back - I'm glad I did as the size die setting and the crimp die setting required way more work and testing than I had planned.

Haven't bought any 405s for some years, but can recommend that bullet from experience as a good practice bullet for shooting paper.
