I spoke with Mike at NF yesterday and he is out of the FN and CUP points for the 470. I was interested in giving these a try in my Merkel, do any of you guys have experience with 470 NF in either FN or CUP Solids? Also, do you have any that I can purchase from you to give a try?

I was also going to give the Barnes Banded Solids a try...just ordered those yesterday. I ordered Norma Brass, RCBS Dies and Shellholders, probably use Fed 215 Match Grade Primers...thinking of starting with H4350??

What am I missing...do you need fillers with full house loads...if so what kind do you recommend???

I have a Merkel that was regulated for TB Sledgehammers....Thanks, Jim

I use 90 gr of RL-15 in the 470 w/500 gr bullets 4831 also works well I think the case is to big for 4350. Most guys seem to use dacron filler on top of the powder charge. I tried it both ways and quit using the filler. For a pratice load try 35 gr. of 5744 and a 500 gr cast bullet. It comes pretty close to regulating in my merkel

I have shot a number of Buffalo with the .470 and the Cup Points in my Searcy .470 two years going....Also in the 404 and 416 Rem...A great bullet, the best Buffalo bullet I have ever used...bar none.

My .470 load is a mild 85 grs. or RL-15 and 5 grs. of dacron for 2020 FPS, easy on the shoulder and slams the black bulls to the ground..I see no need to use my other load of 108 grs. of IMR-4831 for 2245 FPS as it kicks like a mule and I couldn't see any difference is killing effect...so why take all that abuse.

I might add that there has been many a ringed barrel or worse from not using a filler with RL-15..The last thing you want in a double rifle case is an air space..

Ray,
Will both of these loads regulate in your Searcy? I have never used anything but RL-15 in mine.

My Searcy will come to point of aim with about any load, any bullet and changing bullet weights or loads doesn't seem to make one bit of difference..and it shoots all factory ammo to the same POI..It even shoots a squib load of 45 grs. of 5744 XMP to the same POI and its going about 1000 FPS I guess....I think it would shoot a beer can to POI, and it shoots them all under 2 inches, and I'm playing it safe at 2", actually mostly shoots one hole at 50...

I have owned a lot of double rifles, but never one like this one, and apparantly others have had similiar circumstances.

Ray,
I have tried Woodleigh and Barnes including the 470 XLC in my Searcy's (I have owned 2) with RL 15 and had great success. I have also tried the 5744 load with cast bullets and found it deadly on Pigs. This load also works great with the new .475 pistol bullets that are available now. The only problems I have had in my guns was with Hawk bullets. For some reason they shot like hell in both Doubles. I did not experiment with them very much and still have some if you want to try.

Roscoe,
Kevin posted some Northfork cup points on a below thread that I dug out of Buffalo, both 470 and 404s..

I have no use for Hawk bullets, I have shot about 25 head or so of animals with them and had way too many failures with them, I have those bullets that I recovered in a cigar box, they turn inside out even though I used the thickest jackets, they don't all fail but a high percentage of them do, they are nothing more than a conventional bullets with soft copper jacket and pure lead inside and no means to hold the jacket but taper regardless of the hype that goes with them..they would probably work with old lever action calibers...

I will buy me some of the .475 cast bullets and give them a try...I have some cast bullets the several people have sent me to try..but my gun is at Bill Dowtins for a restocking job of exhibition walnut as we speak so testing is on hold...

Ray,
If you know of someone who will sell the 470 cast bullets please let me know who they are. I bought a bunch from a guy in alaska several years ago and I am nearly out. I no longer have his address and would like to buy some more.

Wayne Doudna sells both 440 grain and 590 grain cast bullets that can be used in the .470 NE. I would recommend the lighter bullet as you may not get enough velocity for the heavier bullet to regulate.
