Caliber 550 Express / OAL: 3.35"

MUST be a CRF design and deliver VALUE! (AKA - Bang For The Buck!)
Must hold one in the chamber with at least two in the mag, and really prefer three in the mag.

In this write up it says Win Mod 70 works, I think that's a possible error.

"Neal Shirley and Jeff "jeffeosso" Smith created this round in 2003. The .550 caliber was
uniquely created by Mr. Shirley who had the honor of firing the first loads through this
caliber. The Express has an overall length of 3.35" and a case length of 2.55". It can fit
into strong "standard" length actions such as Mauser 98s, Ruger M77 Mark IIs, Enfield P14,
M17 or Winchester Model 70 actions."

Correct bullet placement, combined with the required depth of bullet penetration, results in an anchored animal...

Best value for a big magnum length action with CRF - CZ 550.

Thank you. I thought I might get that for an answer, as well as another. I'll wait and see.

DRH,

Not sure why do you think the M70 Winchester wouldn't also work just fine with the 550 Magnum as it has the same bolt diameter as the other rifle actions listed.

The 550 Magnum uses basically a belted shortened improved .416 Rigby case. Ron Berry has an extremely accurate M70 chambered in his 49-10 (aka: 12.7x68, .500/338 Lapua Magnum) cartridge which is a 2.65" improved .338 Lapua Magnum case (a non-belted shortened improved .416 Rigby derivative) necked up to .500 caliber.

Anyway no reason to believe that the M70 and the 550 Magnum wouldn't be a good match...

The CZ 550 with a Wisner floor plate would hold 4 down w/1 in the chamber. That would be a lot of bang!

Jim,
True. Wink
Just use a windowed RUM box, spring and follower,
and a Sunnyhill drop floor plate with the McMillan stock to match
to get 3 down in the box plus one in the chamber of a 550 Express M70 Winchester.
Works for up to 3.6" COL cartridges.
A 3.4" COL would be a piece of cake.
No-go IMHO on a 3.75" COL in the M70,

I thought that I had read that ALPHIN tried the Win. Model 70 with
the 500 A2 and it proved unworkable. So I concluded that the .550
is OUT.

So RIP, is what you said for present day production Mod. 70 Win?

You just can't beat the CZ550 for bang for the buck on nearly any big bore. M70's 1917 Enfields etc can be made to work but not as easily as the CZ550.-Rob

Sure thing.
Mine is a Connecticut Classic. The South Carolina variety would do just the same.
