RNS,

Thanks for the brass and bullets...

I have an estimate of the capacity, which is 133 and change grains of water, on the 2.65 cases", as I weighed the three singles, and they are an average of 306.2gr .. for reference, the longer 495 asquare is 132gr

(quickload, on straight cases, is a little high.. knock off 50-75 fps for reality)

Quickload, yet to be tested, estimates 2163 at 52,500PSI with the brass 650grs at 3.35" oal and a 22" barrel (22.5)

a 24" (24.5) barrel , 2197, or 15fps per inch.

Change that to 22 and 57500psi (50k cup, about) and that "jumps" to 2222fps.

600gr

52.5 2274

57.5 2337

700 gr 22"

55k 2060

57.5k 2116

800gr

52.5 1874

57.5 1924

For what it's worth, a 650, at 57,500, in a 24" reads 2274... which gets VERY close to my targeted 2200, after fudge factor.

A mauser standard mag holds 2 of these, with space to force a 3rd in for LOADING only... I think 3 down will be doable for a fairly small effort in a 98, at least the way I see it.

So, all, what I am saying it that you can get about 7000 (more)ft/lbs of energy with a bullet over .300 (except the 600) and run right with the 577 nitro (7700ft/lbs 750 at 2150)

So, I'll aim a 650 (sd of .308) with 7031 ft/lbs right with a 577 (sd of .313 with 7700ft/lbs) in a boltgun.. that ANYONE can have for 2500, and I can probably make for 1200-1500, and have 4 shots. taylor KO values 112 for 550, 577 134, 500jeffe 91, 500 nitro 93,

WOW what a monster

Jeffe--I think you guys did that up right at the 2.65 inch
length case for the shorter action length, like Mausers.
For good velocities keeps pressure down, compared to cutting cases back to 2.5 in. And plenty of brass to
be had easy. Ed.

Jeff

I guess the mail service was kind enough to get it there on time.

600gr .035 jacket oal 1.075"

600gr .065 jacket oal 1.115"

I will put the crimp grove so that we have a nose lenght of .675" add that to our case lenght of 2.650" for an loaded lenght of 3.325". Now we have a great answer for mauser actions and powerful cartridges.

jeffeosso,

That sounds like an impressive round.

I want to make sure that I have one thing straight though.
You claim that your limit in recoil is a 500 Jeffery, weighing around 10.5#, shooting 540 grain bullets at 2200 fps. Now you want to shoot a 650 grain bullet at the same velocity. Keeping the rifles weights similar, you do realize that the recoil is going to jump up 20%, don't you?

Have you suddenly developed a significant increase in recoil tolerance?

FWIW, my software says your wildcat will have a case capacity of 134 grains of water. The 495 A Square has a case capacity of 131 grains.

Sounds too cool Jeffe. Now what about laminated stocks. I know they are not traditional, but with cross bolts will they stand up to the recoil? My wood skills are terrible and I can't afford custom stock work so what about a drop in that could be modified some?

Lar,
if that length of pull fits you, I don't see why you couldn't TRY... I am going to do mine in bastogne, I hope...

I am REALLY getting excited about this one.. can load it down to "book" 54 and 58 cal BP levels up to "oh my GAWD"

Working on the mag over the next couple days... at least, the mule for it...

Jeffe, are you saying this can be put onto something like a vz-24. The barrels are available?, The mag-box already fits, the bullets are available and the stock wouldn't be anything unusual(excepting crossbolts, bedding and lugs)or beyond a standard DGR?
Thanks for the great work. Can the barrels be ordered yet? And do you have a smith in mind ready to do this kind of thing? If you are doing this will you e-mail me with prices.
Thanks
Frank

Frank,

Prices and Neal's smith (since I haven't built it yet, i can't say our) are listed on neal's website

http://hometown.aol.com/goldcoins1/myhomepage/index.html

A mauser's mag will hold at least 2 down, on my vz 24s

Neal has done all the work on this, I merely suggested and pressed that one to fit into a mauser. In fact, I had suggested a 2.5", and Neal, with his smith, worked with my request to have a 3.35 MAX length round for the shorter round.

I figured that this noble round would more than match the vaulted 500 NE, and be something like the mythic 577 NE.. Neal vision created this.

I thought a 650gr (sd of .309) at 2200 would be the "perfect" load.. managable by humans, as the 577 truely is for super humans. The shorter is limited to ta 700 gr bullet, due to self limiting constraints of length.

Please visit Neal's site, and if there's anything thing I can help with, I certainly will be happy to.

Thank you Jeffe. I have been following the posts and think I will go for the short action (458 mag size). I am asking about a new smith as my guy has gone into semi-retirment and is not really looking to go into something new.
Thanks,
Frank

Thanks for your interest Mike Scherz 1-928-783-3850 has cutrifled barrels on order and is waiting for a few orders for the button rifled barrels. Mike also has the long reamer and will be ordering the short reamer as well. Give him a call and he can give you more information on the barrels and brass is now available at Midway.

Here is Mikes barrel package
$410.00 for the cutrifled barrel
$250.00 for the button rifled barrel
$100,00 for the rib
sights and barrel band are direct from NECG

You save several hundred dollars for fitting when you get the barrel from Mike.

A .002" gauge would not fit between the rib and barrel and the parts were still rough (straight off the mill)

Thanks Neal. It truly is a thing of growing beauty.

Which barrel do you think is better, Cut or Button. I will have to read a bit about the qualities of both.

You guys have really created a thing to behold. The birth of a wildcat (Or Dino-Cat).

Thank you,
Frank

Haven't Bench rest cometitions been won by both cut and button rifled barrels? It would seem that the button rifleing would have the bore cold worked to a harder surface and should then wear longer than a cut rifled one??

I am not aware of any absolute proof one way or the other. If anyone else is I would like to hear it.
