Hamilton Bowen did 5 for Great Norther Guns in Anchorage.

It will require a new barrel, as the 458 barrel is deeply drilled to fit the pins for the 1/4 rib. It'll also require modifications to the extractor and the safety button will need to be slimmed or recessed.

It can be done, but why put a rimless cartridge in a single shot? If it was me me I would opt for a 500NE 3",but that is just me! [Big Grin]

Diesel Dude: Actually the dang Ruger handles rimless rounds pretty darned well inmy experience, which runs from 7X57 to .416 Rigby. I dunno why, but it really does.

Not meaning to start any thing,I just think a single shot/rimmed cartridges are a natural match! To each his own!

I heard about 450 nitro #2 in Ruger #1, 2760fps with 140gr of H4831 under 500gr bullet and 28" barrel . . . Could be funny kicker . . .

Good shooting, Jiri

My #1 Ruger is in 500NE and the rim is a darn pain as they occasionally catch on the breach block going in and out. Go for the 505 Gibbs!

.510-.505 Gibbs might allow for a wider selection of bullets. The catch would be that if you intended to take it to Africa, you might run into that "cartridge headstamp has to match caliber markings on rifle" rule, about which I know practically nothing.

My best guess is that the .505 Gibbs case is worth another 150 fps over the .500 A-Square case, when both are loaded to equal pressures with the same bullet weight and diameter out of the same barrel length. I'd be happy to hear that more is possible.

So....do you want a 1/2" bore or a .505 Gibbs case? Because of the low pressure limits set for .505 Gibbs by the C.I.P., ammunition that conforms to these limits is handily outperformed by .500 A-Square ammunition loaded to permitted pressures. You can get around this if you handload, but then the .510-.505 Gibbs is less difficult to work with than .505 Gibbs because of enhanced bullet availability.
