Anyone have experiences good or bad with the following .416 bullets? Will be using them at .416 Rigby/ .416 Remington velocities. Mainly would be using them for Buffalo but curious with your experiences using them on plans game if a opportunity arises. 400 grain Old Style Jack Carter Trophy Bonded Bear Claws 400 grain New Style ( Silver Bullet) Trophy Bonded Bear Claw 410 grain Woodleigh Weld Core 400 grain Barnes Triple Shock TSX

I have used the 400 grain Barnes tsx 416 Rem on Cape Buffalo-one shoot broadside. Bull went about 30 yards. I also used the barnes in 416 rigby on Water buffalo in Argentina-one shot and dropped. Any of these bullets should be very good for dangerous game and the largest of plains game. Consider solids for smaller game-the solid will simmply punch a hole thru the smaller game. Or take a smaller caliber ie 30 cal.

I've used the 400 grain 416 in both a .416 rigby and a remington mag. Probably killed close to 20 buffalo with it, lots of PG including a bongo thru duiker. Leopard and Lion as well. One that apparently didn't open up (factory Barnes ammo) but otherwise no problems, and the one that didn't open killed the animal. Used quite a few of the old style TBBC (by speer/federal), but switched to the TSX as it was easier to find and penetrates better. Shot a few of the weldcore but they just were not easily available- never used them on game, and my rifle (the rigby one) didn't like them as well as the TSX or the TBBC. I'd rate the .416 expanding bullets as TSX-A frame tied at the top, TBBC a close second, Woodleigh then, and use a different rifle before the Hornady DGS. If you avoid the spine or shoulders, the TSX doesn't tear up the little guys, but deliberately shooting that far back is hard to do. I've been told that there was one early lot of the Speer manufacture TBBC that wasn't good, but the rest were equal to the old Jack Carter bullets. If I had the old ones- and enough to work up a load then take hunting, I'd use those as well.

I’ve shot a few buffalo with the old Jack Carter Bear Claws as well as the new Federal Bear Claws, out of my .416 Hoffman (essentially the same as the Remington). They are excellent Bullets and none of the buffalo I’ve shot with them, both frontal or broadside shots, went very far.

I have used the original Trophy Bonded Bear Claws quite extensively in both a 416 Weatherby Magnum and a 416 Rigby Improved. Shot lots of buffalo, several lions and and lots of plains game. Worked very well.

Thanks for the reply’s so far, lots of experience and good advice. One of the reasons I was asking is I have available to me a quantity of the Woodleigh Weld Core 410 grain soft points in both factory Federal ammunition and boxed bullets. I already have on hand a pretty good quantity of the new Federal Premium Safari Game-Shok loaded with the new version Trophy Bonded Bear Claws. I also have available to me a quantity of older Factory Federal Premium loaded with the old version of the Jack Carter Trophy Bonded 400 grain . I have also heard great things about the Barnes TSX but have zero experience with these. It’s been a long time since I played with a .416 , the last one being a .416 Hoffman.

The .416s have been truly blessed with good bullets since the originals produced for Rigby in the early years of the last century. You just can't go wrong with any of them. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

We were in Matetsi, out in the morning. Found lion tracks chasing a herd of buffalo, very fresh. Roy suggested we come back later, and follow them. We did. Not far we came across a lion and a lioness. I had a 416 Rigby Improved we built. 400 grain TB BC. I short the lion and he dropped. The lioness was not very happy about it, and we had one on license. Roy said shoot her. I did. She started jumping about, and shit her again. A few minutes later our truck came, and a Swedish friend who was hunting with us was not too impressed! He said “I heard three shots. And all I can see is two lions! Where is the third one?”

I have been using TBBCs (both the old and new ones) in most of my hunting rifles for years and years and they never fail to kill as long as you do your part.
