Anyone had any experience with the 38/72? A nice old M95 Winchester just found its way into my house and I am interested in bullet sources and loads. I suspect AA 5744 will work well enough but appreciate any help anyone can give re: bullet sources and loads...
I'm familar with this cartridge just to the point of knowing about it. I'm a .38-55 fan and have several of them in old lever rifles. So being a bullet caster and handloader I also have several different .375" to .383" bullet molds. What does the groove diameter run on your rifle? I have an old Ideal 375296 that IIRC throws a .383" 272? grn FNGC bullet. Was just the right stuff for an old 1893 Marlin. Jeff Pfeifer
FRANK at Mt Baldy Bullets can help with the bullets . Winchester Lever Legacy By "Snookie Williams has data . My copy is at home . www.mtbaldybullets.com
Thanks, guys, for your help. I have not slugged the bore but am going to start with some .380", 260 grain Cast Performance bullets ahead of 5744. I have Snookie's book and will check his data. Mike Venturino's Shooting Lever Guns book had some info, too. Will get some Mt. Baldy bullets, too......
Also look for The Legacy of the Lever Gun edited by Dave Scovill of Rifle/Handloader magazines, Wolfe Publications in 2000. He has brass forming, bullet and load suggestions.
