Low pressure. I fire a right-handed rifle from the left shoulder, so I'm not interested in having anything interesting happen. Ever.

The Rigby is no better than the 416 Rem, 404 or a host of others, the pressure thing is overplayed today and only held water with cordite....

The popularity of the Rigby is like that of a double rifle, its nostalgic pure and simple and I am as guilty as the next guy of that phenomina,

I will qualify that the Rigby can be loaded to the velocity of the 416 Weatherby, but no one does that, nor should they IMO...

With a trip to the land of Elephants and Cape Buffalo in mind, I caught the .416 fever, got a Model 70
Safari Express in the the Remington variety and enjoyed tweaking it tremendously. Then my son decided he wanted to go to Africa with me. What did I do next day with malice of forethought, bought a .416 Rigby. Now I am in seventh heaven playing to my hearts content. It is kind of neat to shoot them together and compare, both are very accurate when I do my part. I scoped them the same in order to keep as much as possible the same. Yep, I like them both, and can't wait to shoot them again this week. [Wink] Good shooting.

I love the ability to load up or down. I can shoot it 'factory' stock for low recoil and heavy bullets, or I can load it up and get 300 win mag ballistics with the 300 X bullet.

I likes it 'cause it'll shoot clear through the block of my daughter's boyfriend's stepdaddy's '68 Ford pickup. If that little s.o.b. ever comes by my house again after midnight, I'll shoot that damn 289 straight shift another time... killed that sucker last month, and I'll bet you a dime to a dollar that he's walking if he tries to sneak down my street again. Only problem is that a Rigby, if you ain't shooting softs, will just keep goin' and kill your mother-in-law's cat on her porch a dang half-mile away, if you ain't careful. I was lucky as hell and only shot the tail of the little turd, but Mama Smith won't talk to me none any more, not that I care much.... So... I love my Rigby cause it'll stop a F-100 dead in its tracks so you can do a little baseball bat tango with a snotty nose teenager, not to speak of the penetration on a doublewide (if you gotta convince somebody that they owe you money). Not to call Ray a liar, but my .404 Jeffery hardly will stop a Yugo on a Texas heart shot .

Left an 8 foot veranda roof at a dead run one night escaping an unexpected father. Hit the ground and never broke stride. Glad he wasn't like you, Judge. Of course, I did have to answer for it later when he snuck up on me. 22 years later she's still beautiful. Thanks for the laugh, Judge.
Best,

Judge G, I thought you said you wouldn't shoot at me no more, after I married my cousin...er, Her....

the 416 rigby is, to me, nostalgia, like the 577 nitro and 500 jeffery.....

Though i'll probably build a 404x416 when i get around to it. practical and all....

Just say the words..."416 Rigby". Kinda rolls off the tongue and conjures up all sorts of mental images of sun and dust and trackers....

Compare this to "416 Remington Magnum". Too clinical to me. Not that the performance is lacking, or that it is inferior (though it IS belted - not for me...).

Like Ray says, it's nostalgia, and there's nothing wrong with that!! The fact that it's plenty potent and accurate is a nice bonus. maxman

Why do I love it? Because it works! [Smile]

It works close up, plenty of power.
It works at 300 yards, plenty of power.

Also, it scares the hell out of the Ulra-Mag crowd. "You think your case is big? Look at this. Want to try it?" Usually they run away in fear.

Any bullet/cartridge combo that leaves an entrance hole visible in a photo is cool. Look at the pic of the gemsbok below. The black spot on the shoulder is the entrance hole.

Did You Know:

That Rigby only made 182 .416 Rigbys between 1911 and 1982? [Smile]

I prefer the versatility that the .416 Rigby gives you that you don’t get from the .416 Remington Magnum. That and the lower pressures that the Rigby DOES have. I think that the .416 Rigby and the Ruger M77 Magnum go together like milk and cookies. Lawdog

I'm gonna try one out tonight on my daughters boyfriends Uncles Toyota pickup! I'll bet the holosight will line up just right with the rear taillight. I hope it stops that sucker cold! My bet is then 410 gr woodleigh solid will wind up in lake Meade!-Rob

The 416 rigby not only sounds good, it is a good. I don't use to many low pressure loads in my ruger,...its a modern action, loader up and let's feel the power! I like to load it like the 416 weaterby ...get those 350 grainers goin' 2800fps for some real stopping power over 6000 foot lbs. of muzzle energy! My plinkin' load runs about 2750fps with the 350 gr speer and has shot 3rds. into .5 at 100yds and 7rds into 6 inches at 500yds. Have fired several hundred of these plinkin' rounds, but usually only about 20 rds.at a time cause it does recoil a bit. Then I pick up the 17 rem and shoot it what a difference!!

Top Ten Reasons why I own a 416 Rigby.

10. I got a good deal on a Ruger
9. I had a bunch of IMR 4350 to get rid of, but not a lot of bullets.
8. For an old case, it really looks modern.
7. It is analogous to my, uh well, uh, better than a 30-06, 300 Wby, or most other calibers.
6. It kicks like a mule and I can take it.
5. It scares Democrats.
4. You cant buy one or ammo for it at Wal-Mart
3. Even guys at the range, not just soccer moms, ask, Why do you need it?
2. They dont make a .417 Rigby
1. Chicks dig it.

Entoteledonts, schmelodonts and optirectialopaguses too!!!
I use my Ruger 416 Rigby (special Boomenschutzer model) to take on prairie dogs. Stops em cold in thar tracks. Haven't had one follow thru on an attack since I started using it. You do have to be careful on the TX heart shots though. Seems prairie rats have a special lubricant that enables the projectile to pass thru when taken rectally. The projo actually picks up speed with this lubricant and doesn't slow down until it comes to ground. Very dangerous situation requiring the very best optics to ensure you take only head or broadside shots forward of the diaphram. Top this one judge.

Duckear, just this weekend I was alternating between my .300wthby at the 300yd range and the Rigby at the 100yd range while the .300 cooled. Same story as you, an old timer walks up and says "what the heck is that?" ... .416Rigby... "what do you use it for?"...Africa..."ever shoot anything cool with it?"...yep.

It never fails, there is always at least one person at the range that inquires.
