TonyRumore450 Nitro 500gr @ 2411fps
I finally got around to running my Ruger #1 450 Nitro over the chronograph today. It ran the 500gr Hornady RN at 2411fps with 115gr of H4831 short cut. At about 7.5 pounds, recoil is brutal.
My other load with 110gr of VV560 only went 2232fps with the same bullet.

cal pappasI can only imagine the recoil. That is why I sold my .600 single shot and why the God created double rifles.

jeffeossoNever truer level of loads in a double or vintage single rifle
That being said I bet it is something to hold on too. My first 458 accrel was light and burned about less powder to get there. Recoil was brisk with a bit of boot

ELeetonTony,
I didn't realize that you were a big bore enthusiast as well. Do you think that maybe you can offer a Saiga 12 ga. conversion to 450 Nitro in the near future.

Cal, that is the single factor which kept me hemming and hawing over your Jeffery. Glad it found a home.
When discussing recoil of a .600 single shot, one of my respected friends asked "well, have you ever been in a car accident?"
I own a Ruger No.1 in 458 Lott and have yet to come up with a good reason to load any full power loads.

ZephyrAs an owner of a 450 3 1/4 Double all I can say is OUCH

RIPMy Ruger No. 1 chambered in 450 NE 3.25" "Thin Rim" of 1898 is just a re-chambered .458 Lott with 1:14"-twist, fat, 24"-barrel. It weighs about 9.5 pounds dry, 10.5 pounds with 2.5X Ultralight Leupold scope, rings and slip-on recoil pad.
Even heavier with ammo.

Sounds like a GOOD ONE !!!

Correct bullet placement, combined with the required depth of bullet penetration, results in an anchored animal...

Idaho Sharpshooterwoo-woo!!
once you get over 100 ft/lbs of recoil the experience is totally different.
The last loads in my 550 Gibbs, 135gr of H335 with a 600gr SP generated 8,216 ME at just over 2600fps.

thecanadianFor some reason I could never get above 2300ft/s with H4831 no matter how much powder I stuffed into the case. I have had better results with IMR4350 and VV N150. I assume you have the Boddington series No. 1?

TonyRumoreI'm using Jamison cases and had to go to the Short Cut 4831 and use a powder drop tube in order to get 115 grains in the case. I have some Hornady cases as well but they won't hold that load.
The gun is one of the Boddington series.
