Has anyone actually used or witnesed both a 375 H&H and one of the hotter 375's{RUM, 375wby, 378wby, or 375/404} effect on DG.
Is there any diffrence in knock down power.
Pleas spare me from the "If your ammo is lost.." or "It's all you need..."
Thanks

I have two thoughts on this:

1. Everybody else is asleep.
2. Based on the 'All-America' thread, everybody else thinks you're going 'light' on your choices in cartridges.

From what I've read in magazines over the years, and here on this Forum, I'd comment that between the two locations and animals mentioned, there are only two choices of caliber and one action to consider --- if you want to have two rifles to hunt the WORLD with...

.338 Win.Mag. for North America

.458 LOTT for Africa
MAUSER dirivitive with Controlled Round Feed action

This leaves you with a 'chance' at the BUFF with the .338 so you don't feel naked.
&
'We Band of Bubbas' bottom line for game that bites back!
( personally, I like the 2-position safety feature of the CZ 550's because it acts like my Remington 700's --- and I can pretend I'm not being pretentious with a 'CRF' action... Razzer ).

You've been searching for a 'flatliner' for NA, and now you're asking about a 'stopping cartridge', which I gather the .458 LOTT definetly IS...

And, that's how I've arrived at my answer --- it's all these guys that post here on the AR BIG BORE Forums that have poisoned my MIND... beer

As too not add much I do own a 375 rum but have yet to see it in action in Africa. I have read articles that it really reaches out far, much much more than the h&h.. I will try to find the article

My hunting partener shot a Buffalo with his 375 Weatherby. He was using 300 grain Barnes X bullets. His shot opening was a staight on chest shot at about 85 yards. He hit it perfectly and that was all it took. The bull ran off about 100 yards and then we heard the death bellows. By the time we walked up to the bull he was done. This was perfect shot placement and that's the requirement with a 375 more so than with a larger caliber ,not that you can shoot and miss your aim point with the bigger cartridges it just that you get away with less with a 375. If you are a calm accurate shooter it would be a caliber you could look into.
Take care,
Dave

A .375 caliber 300 grain bullet at 2500 fps vs 2700 to 2800 fps isn't going to make that much difference on an animal as large as a buffalo. They just don't sucumb to "shock" like a whitetail will.

I've seen seven buff hit with the .375 H&H and one with the .375 Dakota. Some have taken one shot most took several. The average of all buff I have seen took three rounds, including the insurance shot. The Dakota took two. Hardly scientific and not a large enough sample to be conclusive, but I stick to my original statement, not enough difference to notice.

However, always happens, someone hits the spine or cervical column, buff drops like a ton of bricks and they pronounce the gun a "death ray" and perfect for buffalo. BTW, I like the .375 for buff with premium bullets, any flavor.
