Red Dot or Holosight for my .577 NE ? Login/Join

Please help. I am still trying to figure out what make/type of reflex sight to switch to on my 577NE.
I now have a scope mounted on it and want to try a Red Dod or holosight. I have aperture sights on other big bores and like them but still want to try a reflex type of sight for my .577NE. I like to get within 50 yds for my shot on cape buffalo.

Holosite or Red Dot? What make? Thanks, Brian

I would ping Bitterroot aka Wayne at AHR. At one time he was suggesting the Trijicon RMR but then I think he moved to the Leupold Deltapoint. I'm not sure what he uses today.

I have a 458 with a Fastfire 2 that seem good (chosen because there was a mount available for the Ruger integral bases) and a 505 set up for the RMR but have not yet fired that one.

I have had significant problems with the Gen 1 Deltapoint. I could not get the adjustments to work properly. Of course, Leupold made it right and shipped me another brand new unit but I sold it unopened because I had no faith in it. I still might try a Gen 2 unit based on Leupold’s customer service alone!

The Burris fastfire 3 is another option I have used. I do believe the RMRs are tougher units, though.

All of my experience with compact red dots have been on semi-auto rifles and briefly on a pistol.

Good info, thanks.
Do you know if the Holosight is much better, visually, than the regular Red Dot? ( I see that it costs more.)
The 577 recoil on my heavy rifle is not a "sharp" recoil, so it's probably not too hard on a sight.

I have used RMR sights on several DG Rifles and on some light rifles. I like them. They are quick and accurate as well. I use Burris Fast Fire 3. Taken both Ele and Cape Buff. If the dot size is small you can be very accurate even at long range. They weigh nothing and do not throw a well balanced rifle off balance.

Competitive pistol shooters beat the crap out of these sights everyday. RMR tough, leupold and Burris no so much. I have tried the holosight on several carbines, reticle is too busy for me and therefore slow. Try looking at Aimpoint, particularly the Micro. Toughest by far and you can turn it on and leave it on all year. Replace it's battery on it's birthday

bradhen, Thanks for the info. I think that I will pass on the holosight. I am going look closely at RMR and Aimpoint Micro. I would like something compact.

Bill73, I have been looking at Docter red dots. Good to hear that they don't mind big bores. Thanks, Brian

Joe-S, The meprolight M21 looks like an awesome optic. Thanks for mentioning it. It seems just too big for my taste.

Joe-S, Yes, since your first post I have watched a good YouTube videos on the M21. I looks like a perfect rig. It would be interesting to know the CO of a company like that!

It's just that I am an old guy and my 12 pound .577 buffalo rifle is getting heavier and bigger each year. I hope to find a small reflex sight for it.

I made another cape buffalo rifle in a cartridge that will be easier for a old fart to carry. It's an 7.5 lb. TC Encore, 500 cal, 450 gr bullet at 2000+ fps. I put a set of aperture sights on it that I am hoping I will still be able to see when this covid pandemic is over and I can fly to Africa. I also built a (ugly) "Tank" muzzle brake for it, I am ashamed to tell you.

I am interested in where you are generally located in Nunavit. Are you First Nations by any chance? Are you getting some milder weather yet? We were in Ft Simpson in the early 70's before we came out. We live in Kamloops now. www.fastcutcnc.com , I'm retired and my son Russ has the company now.

Cheers, Brian

You all have suggested some excellent sights. I can't get them all! I am very attracted to the Aimpoint Micro H2. There is a YouTube video of a guy using it on break open rifle for a cape buffalo that I could relate to. Thanks again to all. Brian

Here is the one that I am going to put on my 458 win mag. It is totally enclosed like the Aimpoint Micro series, that way no way no water, mud, snow, or dirt can get between the emitter and glass. I like the circle dot options available, and that it has the same footprint/size as the Trijicon RMR but uses the picatinny rail. Also, if you you-tube some reviews (Sage Dynamics) it has survived some pretty tuff torture testing.

Lk Hntr, Man I really like the looks of that Holosun model. Compact, enclosed and good in all light. I have heard that Holosun are very good.

Thanks for the heads-up. That guy on the bing, com video can sure shoot and his
review/assessment is brilliant. Brian

I have a Trijicon RMR on my .500 NE Double.

Probably held up to 200 rounds of practice 3 safaris and 3 ele.

Maybe others as good...but I can recommend the Trijicon.

Lk Hntr, I like the Holosun pistol sights. They take 5000G. I suppose that is good!
They are sure priced right too. Brian
