Scope for M70 in 375H&H Login/Join

I have a 375H&H M70 that needs a scope. I bought a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x that seems to be popular on the forum, but the tube is too short to mount! I'm using Leupold QRW bases and rings.

I would like something with more than 4x or 5x top end magnification for longer shots. I also want a quality scope. The combination of quality, magnification, and price lead me to the leupold.

Any suggestions on something that would suit my fancy other than the VX-3 1.5-5? Obviously I can spend up for higher end glass, but I like good value as well.

Thanks,
QD

1. You might consider a front mount base that extends backward.

2. If you are not going to shoot small targets/game 3X is plenty of magnification to shoot 350 yards. Large game should not be shot further. Really large/dangerous game should not be half that. (flame away boys but you are wasting your time on me)

3. Some other pretty good scopes like Nikon, Bushnell Elite and Burris have longer tubes.

4. Some other guys here will recommend other mounts I am sure.

Mine has a 2-7 Leupold and has had the same scope for over 15 years, including 2 trips to Africa.

Always was enough magnification, no issue mounting it, and as to recoil affecting zero, it's held for many years; I only adjust it when working up a new load.

It's been a while since I pulled it out and fired off a few rounds, so I don't recall if I had to reverse the front base--will check next time I'm in the safe.

Hope this helps.

Above is an M70 Winchester of same action length as .375 H&H, with one possible installation for the 2.5-8x36mm Leupold, using Leupold QRW rings.
The scope has been spray painted by me.
I sure took care of the glossy shine on that indestructible scope. hilbily
There is a little bit of overhang of the rear base over the loading port, but no higher-height extension rings are required. You can stick with medium or low rings.

RIP,

Did you just reverse the rear base?

I really like the little 2.5x-8x scope. It would be even better with a #4 reticle.

Thanks,

RIP's solution looks good to me. I was always using it on slightly shorter actions, M70 standard and Ruger, and it fit. The Leupold 2.5-8 was my favorite scope for three decades. It should work great on a 375H&H. It's eye-relief is 3.7" or 3.6" on high magnification (7.8), which is plenty as long as one holds the rifle properly, head upright and tight.

When and if you move to a heavier calibre, I would recommend a Nikon Monarch 2-8 with 4" eye-relief on high power and true 2.0 and 8.0 magnification range. The mounting space is about 5.2" if I remember correctly.

My 500 AccRel Nyati is built on a Ruger Hawkeye. The Nikon 1.65-5 scope has a 5" eye-relief on high power, which is great for a DG cartridge. The 1.65 mag is good up close, too. However, the mounting space was only 4.73" inches and I had to get a reversed front sight from Ruger to mount it.

500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" --

You can get a front base that extends rearward (I know Warne makes one). That is how I have mine mounted on my .375 M-70.

As stated, extended rings should solve your problem. My 375 wears the old standard 1.5-5 Leupy and I have never thought hindered by lack of magnification even at coyotes at 350+yards. Also have a 1.5-6 Kahles with Ill reticule but to me it is a bit too heavy and throws the handling off.

The Leupold 1.5x5 makes a very nice scope for a 375H&H as Blacktailer mentions. It's small size and relatively light weight also don't interfere with handling or the African carrying for rifle.

Even better is the S&B 1.1x4 or Swarovski 1x6, but those are pricey, and unless low light shooting is planned, like for leopard or hyena they don't add much utility.

Yes, either front or rear base is reversible.
Try both to give either the shortest or longest ring separation.
I prefer to have a little overhang at the rear and no overhang at the front of the loading/ejection port.
Seems, to my ways, to be ergonomically OK for loading and might be mechanically more functional for ejection,
to have the front of port wide open, when scope is either on or off the rifle.

There is no way that scope can't be mounted on that rifle and it is an execellent choice. I have that scope as my back-up on my .416. It's plenty long enough

My Sako Fiberclass 375 H&H wears a Leupold VX3 2.5-8 in Talley rings - I find it about perfect for me.

You are better off changing rings than scopes as that's a great one. HAving said that, I used the 1.75-6 on mine and thought it was great

Talley makes an extended front base. I use it on my M70 375 with an S&B 1.5-6. and it solved the mounting space issue. If you call Talley they will sell you one. Make sure you tell them it is for a magnum action.

I decided to go in a different direction. I stepped up and bought a Meopta R2 1-6x today. It's a great scope. I can't wait to get it mounted up.

It's much bigger and heavier than the Leupold.

Good call. I really dislike mounts that hang over. The straight tube scopes were made to mount on big bores. That meopta looks great.

The Leupolds are shorter than most, and on a big bore or any rifle I certainly consider that a real plus..The guarentee is second to none and they are my favorite scope..Most base makers have and extended front base and at no additional cost for that exact problem..I use Talley QDs for the most part and the extended base. I like a scope as compact as possible without giving up quality..Your scope covers all that in spades.

The Swarovski Z 6 i 1,7 - 10 x 42 for sure is the best universal Glass for nearly any huning rifle, if money is no Problem.

The new Kahles seems perhaps even better.

The Swarovski Z 6 i 1 - 6 x, especially in the "EE" Version, is hard to beat during daytime and if "CLOSE" is possible.

The Leupis may be good overall, but their FOV is DEFINITELY inferior to Swaro or Kahles. Even on the newest ones.

The Zweiss Duralyt 2 - 8 x 42 is which is on my .375, but might Change this before the actual hunting trip to the Swaro Z 6 i 1,7 - 10 x ... or the Zeiss Duralyt 1,2 - 5 x ...

( and my old and trusty Swaro 1,25 - 4 x without Illu will be with me on that trip as back - up scope )

Of course those QRW factory bases could be custom drilled and cut and positioned to avoid any overhang and fit the best scope for the money.

Leupold Best Buy Scope: Saeed and Walter and untold many more users have given it a lickin' and it keeps on tickin'.
Saeed has done some phenomenal shooting with that 2.5-8x36mm Timex Leupold.

Watch ebay for a Zeiss 3x9 Conquest. Nice scope and it will fit with room to spare. There was a 3x9 Conquest for sale recently in the classifieds. It may still be for sale. You should be able to find one for around $375.

The Leica ER 2,5-10x42 is an exellent choice!
Eye relief is 4 " and it can be had with different reticles.
They are on sale at www.euroopic.com for the moment to a very good price as the ER model will be replaced by the ERI with the illuminated reticle.

The scope is 30 mm and a bit heavier than the Leupolds, but is quality all the way around.

I just got one with reticle #1 for my M70 / 375 H&H.

The Luepold 2.5-8 isn't perfect. I had one lose its zero and it wouldn't readjust. That was on an oryx hunt and I completed the hunt with a Savage using a Budhnell scope. Of course Leupold fixed it but now it sits on a .308. I have a 2-7 Leu on my .375 Ruger and it hasn't had any problems.

I like this scope also. I have one of these Meopta's with the 4C reticle. I have not sighted in nor hunted with it, yet. But,informally comparing it with a Zeiss HT 1.1-4 x 24 that I have, I am very impressed.

My personal .375 H&H is a pre 64 mod. 70, and early gun. It has a 3X Leupold fixed power on it in Talley QD rings and a front extended base, and I have a Talley QD Ghost peep the works off the rear Talley base. I carry the peep in a pouch on my cartridge belt..It works like a charm..I like having immediatel access to my iron sights in case a buffalo or whatever gets into the bush and I need to go in after him, and I do not want a scope on my gun for that..Its a great caliber and a fine DG rifle IMO.

For what its worth I use this same set up and my 375 for Idaho elk in the black timber and have used it for Mule deer and African plainsgame and it just works to suit me fine everywhere I have used it..
