CZ 550 Safari Classic and low scope rings question Login/Join

I know it probably has been said/discussed here before, but too I'm short on time this week to look for it. If you use "low" CZ 30mm rings on the 550, will you see too much of the Express sights in the scope? Right now I have medium Leupolds and I am just catching the front hood in the bottom of the view.

Rae59, I have the Warne mediums on my 416 Rigby. The bolt is standard and has not been adjusted, but clears the scope (VX-III 1.5 x5 x20 in 30mm) just right. I dont know if the low rings might catch the bolt?

Rae59,
stuey is making the important point.
It is about clearance of the bolt handle as it goes by the ocular bell of the scope!

Do not worry about seeing your iron sights in the scope on low power!
Ignore that, look past it and focus on the reticle and the game.

I have a set of the long discontinued low Warne QD rings for the CZ 550 Mag and BRNO ZKK 602.

The only scope those low Warne QD rings can be used with is the Leupold 2.5X, because that scope has the only ocular bell small enough to allow the bolt handle to clear as the bolt is worked.

If you are using a 30mm scope then your ocular bell will no doubt call for medium height rings, or taller, depending on the make of the rings.

I agree with Stuey and RIP. Good solid advice.

Thanks for the post gents. My problem with my current Leupold medium rings is that I am not getting good cheek weld to the stock when I throw the rifle up for quick sight acquisition. In other words it is the classic "raising your head off the stock to see through the scope" scenario. I have the rifle in front of me at this moment. There appears to be appox. 3/16" to 1/4" of clearance between the eyepiece and the bolt handle at the nearest point (about 1/3rd of the way up from the bolt). The eyepiece measures 1 &9/16th" with a tape(don't have my calipers handy). I believe most low rings would lower the scope no more than appox. 1/8th of an inch. It should clear the bell. My concern is if I do get low rings will I only be seeing the express sights? I failed to mention my scope is a Leupold European 30 in a 2X7. I am not certain but I do not beieve the eyepiece is any larger than the Leupold 2.5X one inch tube job. Any suggestions on rings are greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

I have "solved" the cheek-weld problem for me by using moleskin and a pull-on cartridge holder over it to build it up. Spoils the aesthetics some but makes for better shooting on my part. You could try a strap on leather cheek piece if one can be found. Beartooth Products has a neoprene sleeve approach to the same idea if you want to have something not stuck on to the stock.

Also, when I tried low rings on my CZ 550 Lux the bolt wouldn't lift all the way. (Leopold 3-9X40 scope.)

I don't think you'll ever "see" the express sights, but if you're in such a situation, you should have taken the scope off already.

Good one!
I thought about having reconstructive surgery to lower my chin/cheek bone.

Rich,
Sorry no specials.
Easy to do on your own time: meat, taters, beer
Use a goodly quid of Red Man chewing tobacco until diet has desired effect.

Right hand shooter put the baccie in the right cheek, and vice versa.

Remember to spit before you shoot those big bores, or you will be spewing all over yer scope ocular.

FWIW- I called CZ and Brownell's. There is no one currently making low mount scope rings for a 30mm tube. I forgot to ask about rings for a 1" tube.

Here is the discontinued Warne Low QD with a 2.5X Leupold on a "first edition" CZ .505 Gibbs.

No ocular bell bigger than the one on this scope will work with that low set:

My one set of these rings is not for sale.
