The case coloring on this rifle is WOW! Hee is a link to the other pictures. 404 Jeffery Just browsing the Cabelas listing this morning and they have several CZ 404 Jefferys and 505 Gibbs for sale. Now I love my custom 404 Jeffery, but the prices for these and the fact you don't have to wait for years, makes them very attractive! Just my opine! Rusty We Band of Brothers! Not bad. Just file down front edge of that 'island sight' base and glue down those folding leaves (you only need 100m one).

I think I saw that rifle, and another just like it 416 Rigby at Champlins a while back. It handled as good as it looks. One of the nicest looking and handling bolt rifles I have seen in a long time. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Those rifles are really nice, and all made on standard length mauser 98 actions including the 416 Rigby!!!! square shooter

Wilkins, is that some ironmonger outfit? You know, 80% of English gun's value is in the name. Something like this could be had for 2k at English auction house. Is Wilkins to Wilkes what W.Richards is to Westley Richards?

And I know a member here who just bought that classy piece. Maybe he will tell us about his load development and buffalo hunts done with it one day.

I transfered that .404 home this week. I understand all of the value issues. Buy a gun at and English auction, cheap enough, and it takes no less than three people to get it into the states. They all are paid and lots of people have handled your prize. Have one built stateside and wait and wait and wait. So I though to myself...these guys...I learned the details on Ar...have built a few more .404's than us Yanks so lets give this one a try. It is a pleasing rifle to handle. Now for the important part. I will have a report soon. gduffey

If someone can locate more of these rifles for 2k, as has been mentioned. I will take a dozen. I would love to have Rigby engraved on the barrel, and I can get a CA Rigby for 23k and it is finished no better than this rifle. I could get a Holland...well thats more money yet...WR....mo worser. I could buy an action, bottom metal, barrel, sights, turkish walnut, pay for the heat treating and case color and stocking and wait and wait and wait and wait. And it would still have someones name on it that adds no more value. I missed a Hoffman..and still hate it. Anyway it was cold yesterday and the wife was christmas shopping. So...I built a fire and got the .404 out of the safe and my little John Dixon takedown 1903 MS in 6.5x54....and just had a grand old time watching the Outdoor channel. gduffey

gduffey, You did good! I saw a Mauser 98 in .404 Jeffery at First Stop in Rapid City, SD, and it was clubby, heavy, and no name of maker was engraved or stamped anywhere on the rifle, I had them take it out of the wood to look. They wanted the same price you paid for your much nicer one, which looks to be " as NIB." I could not talk them down on their club, which was a consignment gun, nor could I get them to find any ammo or dummies to try to feed it for me to observe. I think it held 3 down. I left it alone. Questions: Is your rifle glass bedded and does it have a secondary recoil lug on the barrel? Is that a 3 or 4 or 5 down box? The one at First Stop had no glass bedding.

Sounds like an absolutely wonderful afternoon. Perhaps a small glass of Old Heaven Hill and a few ice cubes and it would have been perfect! Congratulations!

I don't think so. It's my understanding that J&L Wilkins rifles are made by Trevor Proctor. When I lived in Britain I used to visit and bought a rifle from Trevor, and my then stalking pal had a Proctor rifle. The 404 above looks to be is a good example of Trevors' work. gduffy. If I'm right and your 404 has been put together by Trevor then you will have a very good shooting iron. Do let us know how it shoots. Good Luck.

All...I know it is 4 down and will pick up the 5th round. I haven't taken it out of the stock yet. I will have to make a screwdriver to fit when I can. I does feed slick as ice. I fed 1, then from two down, ect. Now if it shoots...gduffey
