Anyone got any load data for a .510 Gibbs? I searched here and didn't find any data although there are a lot of references to the caliber. Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Can't you use 505 Gibbs load data or 500 J as some starting points ? Previously 500N with many thousands of posts !

would think that .505 g would be pretty much spot on. Case capacity being almost the same and bullet weights being identical. 500j has a different case capacity and operates at a different pressure. I would use the load data for the J.

With bulky slow burning powder it is hard to over load the 505G. Previously 500N with many thousands of posts !

I could use the Gibbs data for "light" loads. But building the .510 on a new MRC PH action etc should be able to load to more modern pressure limits. Anyone know of any data utilizing all that case capacity?

The .510 Gibbs is not a standard cartridge. Many different versions exist, with various changes in overall brass length, neck length and shoulder angle. Which one are you using? If it is the .505 Gibbs necked up with no other changes, then indeed the .505 Gibbs loads will be starting loads for you. You will have to add more powder to equal the low pressures of the traditional .505 Gibbs ballistics, if using same weight bullets of same construction. You will also be able to use slightly faster powders and beat .505 Gibbs ballistics. As long as the brass is modern stuff capable of high pressures, and your rifle is capable of handling the bolt thrust, and your shoulder is capable of handling the recoil, then you are in for some adventures in handloading. An extra .005" of "Bore Law" is not going to do much more than the .505 Gibbs. But it will open up a greater variety of .510 caliber bullets for use. Anybody doing a .500 Gibbs with .500"-diameter bullets? Lots of good rifle bullets of that caliber now also, thanks to CEB and North Fork.

I used 505 data for my .510/.505 and found 130gr IMR 4831 made a nice using load with 535gr Woodleigh bullets. Thanks for the comments. I haven't decided what .510 I would build yet. Most likely it would not be just necking up the .505 though. I would want less case taper while still using the 3.15 inch case to gain a little more case capacity and at the same time being able to easily fire form cases. I have a decent supply of Jamison brass and I was curious what load data was available for full power loads.

I think the 505 Gibbs is a lovely cartridge, but when I hear 130g of powder, I just can't help myself from thinking ouch ouch! I'll stick with the pussycat load in my 500 Jeffery of 103g H4895 and 570g bullet ... It was a hard choice between it and the Gibbs though ... My load for the .510 Gibbs was 135 gr of IMR4831 and a brass 535 gr Bullet. Shot better than 1 MOA too!-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

RIP Could you elaborate a little more on bolt thrust? Where have cartridges/rifles failed on bolt thrust? which cartridges/loads/rifles? +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

416 Tanzan- You should look up the early history of Weatherby who initially chambered 300 wby magnums in M98's of dubious age , lineage and heat treatment. The bolt thrust set the receiver locking lugs back to the point the actions could not be opened.Bad JuJU for old Roy WBY. Headspace issues anyone? Only fix is a new action! Thus, the Wby multi-locking lug action was born. Many .585 Nyati's made on M98's and even FN Mauser actions did the same thing. Just stick a .500A2 in a Rem 700 and shoot full power loads till she stops opening! I've seen that one before! Every once in a while someone on this board creates a masterpiece on a old Mauser without paying attention to its heat treatment and wahlah a horror story is reborn! RIP feel free to add your experiences too. Big cases generate a lot of bolt thrust and in general actions designed for 45KPSI just can't handle it. Thats why the CZ550, Montana PH and GMA reign supreme for really Big Bores. We know they can take it within reason.-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

I suggest you say what powder you are using! 144gn of faster powders would be bad news.
