IMHO, the easiest way to get .45-70 ballistics in a bolt action rifle is to buy one chambered in .458 Win Mag and handload for it. The .458 will do anything the .45-70 can do (souped up .45-70 handloads in strong actions, etc.) and more. The .458 has its critics (for African dangerous game hunting, for example) but it does have more case capacity than the .45-70.

Well I don't know about "quality" bolt guns in the .45-70 but there were some Siamese mausers chambered in .45-70 and there is an outfit that does an Enfield MK IV (?) coversion to .45-70 as well.

Gibbs Rifle Co. does an Enfield conversion called the Summit Rifle. I handled one at a show last month and was tempted ( would make a fun hog rifle ) but let it pass. Fit and finish was O.K. considering the $299 asking price. New wood, and IIRC, Williams sights on it.

The best 45/70 bolt action in the world is called a .458 win mag!
Siamese Mausers in 45/70 are a joke. I have never seen or handled one that actually would feed 100% reliably. Neither really has anyone else. If someone wants to sell you one, wanna bet it won't feed?
Do what I do. When I have an idea like that I lay down till it goes away.

I'm with Rob on this, I don't know why anyone would build a bolt .45-70 when you can have a .458 WM with more power capability and a rimless case.

I am building a 45/70 on a P-14 action .
The last 1 I did was 100 percent in feed and eject. Was just offered a good chunk of $$ for it.
And why have the same old same old as every one else?

Winchester M70 Classic Custom Short Action in 450 Marlin
A little pricey at $2708 MSRP, but you could probably build one for half of that.

Yeah i guess it makes sence the 458 would give you 45/70 energy and then you could load much heaiver for the bigger game. But i think i would maybe go with the Ruger M77 Magnum in .458Lott. Thanks Guys

Now your talking Tanoose! The 458 LOTT can be loaded with 45-120 loads with cast bullets for deer hunting, and stump shooting, or loade up to max with solids for Elephant! Addtionally if ammo is lost in transit, you can shoot 458 Win Mag ammo in the LOTT chamber in a pinch! I say this is the best of "THREE" worlds, Old American buffalo (BISON) hunter, African ele hunter, or Paper, stump, and deer hunter, in a quality Express rifle! The Ruger would be my choice as well!
